Austria-Hungary turned Michalovce from a market village into a district town. The railway built in 1871–1874 linked it north towards Medzilaborce and the Galician frontier; a hospital opened in 1876; the town became the seat of a district of Zemplín county. Set against all that improvement, Zemplín also had one of the highest emigration rates in the whole kingdom — tens of thousands of people from these villages left for America, and most never came back.Rakúsko-Uhorsko premenilo Michalovce z trhovej dediny na okresné mesto. Železnica postavená v rokoch 1871 – 1874 ich spojila na sever s Medzilaborcami a haličskou hranicou, roku 1876 tu otvorili nemocnicu a mesto sa stalo sídlom okresu Zemplínskej stolice. Proti všetkému tomu pokroku však stálo aj to, že Zemplín patril k stoliciam s najvyšším vysťahovalectvom v celom kráľovstve — desaťtisíce ľudí z tunajších dedín odišli do Ameriky a väčšina sa už nevrátila.
