Michalovce was never fought over in the First World War, but the war came close. From the autumn of 1914 the Russian and Austro-Hungarian armies pushed back and forth across the Carpathian ridges north of here, and the small walled military cemeteries in the villages above Humenné and Medzilaborce are what that winter left behind. The town's part was the ordinary part of a place behind a front: conscription, requisitioning, hospitals and telegrams.
