Michalovce is the largest town of the Košice region after Košice itself and the working capital of Zemplín — district offices, the hospital, the schools, and the market the surrounding villages come to. It became a district seat again in 1996 under the new Slovak administrative map, and at the end of 2025 it counted about 34,900 inhabitants. The Šírava is still its holiday coast and still argued over, since the water quality and the resorts have had very uneven decades. The Ukrainian border is about fifty kilometres east, and since 2022 that has been part of daily life here again.Michalovce sú po Košiciach najväčším mestom Košického kraja a praktickým hlavným mestom Zemplína — sídlom okresných úradov, nemocnice, škôl a trhu, kam chodia okolité obce. Okresným mestom sa opäť stali roku 1996 podľa novej slovenskej správnej mapy a ku koncu roka 2025 mali asi 34 900 obyvateľov. Šírava je stále ich letným pobrežím a stále predmetom sporov, lebo kvalita vody aj strediská mali za sebou veľmi nerovnaké desaťročia. Ukrajinská hranica je asi päťdesiat kilometrov na východ a od roku 2022 je to tu opäť súčasť každodenného života.
