In February 1921 hungry workers and their families gathered against the shutdown and the shortage of food, and gendarmes fired into the crowd. Several people were killed. It became a fixed point in Slovak labour history and it is fixed in the town itself: the victims' grave, the memorial and the former administration building of the ironworks on Družstevná street are all protected national cultural monuments. The memorial in front of that building was unveiled in 1971, on the fiftieth anniversary. Sources vary on the exact day of the shooting and on how many died, which is worth knowing about an event only a century old and thoroughly remembered.Vo februári 1921 sa hladní robotníci a ich rodiny zhromaždili proti zastaveniu závodu a nedostatku jedla — a žandári vystrelili do davu. Niekoľko ľudí zahynulo. Stal sa z toho pevný bod slovenských robotníckych dejín a je pevný aj v samom meste: hrob obetí, pamätník i bývalá správna budova železiarní na Družstevnej ulici sú chránenými národnými kultúrnymi pamiatkami. Pamätník pred tou budovou odhalili roku 1971 pri päťdesiatom výročí. Pramene sa rozchádzajú v presnom dni streľby aj v počte mŕtvych — a to je pri udalosti starej len storočie a dôkladne pripomínanej samo osebe poučné.
