Czechoslovakia was declared in October 1918, and for Krompachy the new state was a catastrophe rather than a liberation. The ironworks had been built to supply a large empire; the republic that replaced it already had big steel plants in the Czech lands, and it concentrated steelmaking there. Orders dried up, the works ran down and then shut, and a town of six and a half thousand people lost the job of half its adults at once. This is the plainest lesson in the whole timeline: a single-industry town does not fail because its workers stopped working.V októbri 1918 vzniklo Československo a pre Krompachy nebol nový štát oslobodením, ale katastrofou. Železiarne postavili pre veľkú ríšu; republika, ktorá ju nahradila, mala veľké oceliarne v českých krajinách a výrobu ocele sústredila tam. Objednávky vyschli, závod sa utlmil a napokon zatvoril — a mesto so šesťaapoltisíc obyvateľmi stratilo naraz prácu polovice dospelých. Toto je najjasnejšie poučenie celej tejto osi: mesto jedného priemyslu nezanikne preto, že jeho robotníci prestali pracovať.
