History of KrompachyDejiny — Krompachy

Krompachy is what happens when an industry becomes a town. Copper and iron were taken out of the side valleys of the Hornád from the Middle Ages, and in the nineteenth century the works below the town grew into one of the largest ironmaking plants in the Kingdom of Hungary. When it closed after the First World War the town starved, and in February 1921 that hunger ended in gunfire — the single event Krompachy is still known for.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. 1241 and the decades after it1241 a nasledujúce desaťročia The invasion, and the settlers who followedVpád a osadníci, ktorí prišli po ňom

The Mongol army broke into the Kingdom of Hungary in 1241 and wrecked it in a single campaign. King Béla IV's answer was to build in stone and to recruit people — German miners and craftsmen above all, who were offered charters and freedoms if they would settle the emptied land and open the ore. The Spiš, the region on both sides of the upper Hornád, was one of the places they came to in numbers, and the villages of this valley were part of that resettlement. Krompachy itself is not yet in any surviving document; it appears a generation later, which is the usual pattern here.Mongolské vojsko vpadlo do Uhorského kráľovstva roku 1241 a za jedinú výpravu ho rozvrátilo. Kráľ Belo IV. na to odpovedal stavbou z kameňa a získavaním ľudí — predovšetkým nemeckých baníkov a remeselníkov, ktorým ponúkal výsady a slobody, ak osídlia vyľudnenú krajinu a otvoria rudné ložiská.

  2. 1282 · the fourteenth century1282 · 14. storočie First written down, as somebody else's propertyPrvý zápis — a hneď ako cudzí majetok

Krompachy is first named in writing in 1282, in a charter of King Ladislaus IV, and what the charter records is that the place belonged to the royal castle of Spiš. That single line explains the next four hundred years: a village in a castle domain did not decide its own affairs, and whoever held the great castle above Spišské Podhradie held Krompachy too. From the fourteenth century the records begin to mention copper being traded here and market rights being granted, so the ore was already the reason the place mattered. Remember what a first mention is, though — a fact about a document that survived, not the date people arrived.Krompachy sa prvý raz písomne spomínajú roku 1282 v listine kráľa Ladislava IV. a tá listina zaznamenáva, že miesto patrilo kráľovskému Spišskému hradu. Jediný riadok vysvetľuje nasledujúce štyri storočia: dedina v hradnom panstve si o sebe nerozhodovala a kto držal veľký hrad nad Spišským Podhradím, držal aj Krompachy.

  3. 1441–15311441 – 1531 Whoever held the castleKto držal hrad

Because Krompachy hung off Spiš Castle, its fifteenth century is the castle's fifteenth century. In 1441 the Bohemian captain Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, hired to hold northern Hungary for an infant king, took the castle by arrangement and made it his seat; in 1460 King Matthias Corvinus took it back, and in 1465 it went to the Zápoľský family, who turned it into a great lord's residence. After the Zápoľskýs lost the kingdom, the castle and its domain passed in 1531 to the Thurzos. None of these men ever thought about Krompachy for its own sake — it was a source of ore, labour and dues, which is exactly what a subject village was.

  4. 1831 · 1841 · 18481831 · 1841 · 1848 Cholera, a revolt, and the first modern worksCholera, vzbura a prvý moderný závod

In 1831 cholera swept eastern Hungary, and with it came something worse: a rumour that the wells were being poisoned by the lords and their doctors. Peasants across Zemplín, Šariš, Abov and the Spiš rose, Krompachy among the places touched; the army put the rising down and scores of people were executed. Ten years later, in 1841, Ľudovít Trangus and other entrepreneurs built a modern ironworks and rolling mill here — the beginning of everything that follows. And in 1848 serfdom was abolished across the kingdom, so the men who walked into that works were free labourers rather than somebody's subjects. O desať rokov neskôr, roku 1841, tu Ľudovít Trangus a ďalší podnikatelia postavili moderné železiarne a valcovňu — začiatok všetkého, čo prišlo potom. A roku 1848 zrušili v celom kráľovstve poddanstvo, takže do závodu už vstupovali slobodní robotníci, nie niečí poddaní.

  5. 1889 · around 19001889 · okolo roku 1900 The largest ironworks in the kingdomNajväčšie železiarne v kráľovstve

By the turn of the twentieth century the ironworks had swallowed the town: about 3,500 of Krompachy's 6,500 people worked there, and the plant turned out roughly 85,000 tonnes of iron and over 100,000 tonnes of steel a year. Slovak accounts call it the largest ironworks in the Kingdom of Hungary at the time; more cautious ones call it one of the largest, and the difference is worth noticing rather than settling. In 1889 a small hydroelectric station of 22 kilowatts was built here, one of the earliest electric plants anywhere in what is now Slovakia. A town with one employer is rich while that employer is rich, and this is the moment before the test.Na prelome 19. a 20. storočia železiarne mesto pohltili: asi 3 500 zo 6 500 obyvateľov Krompách v nich pracovalo a závod vyrábal zhruba 85 000 ton železa a vyše 100 000 ton ocele ročne.

  6. 1918–19201918 – 1920 A new state, and a works with no marketNový štát a závod bez odbytu

Czechoslovakia was declared in October 1918, and for Krompachy the new state was a catastrophe rather than a liberation. The ironworks had been built to supply a large empire; the republic that replaced it already had big steel plants in the Czech lands, and it concentrated steelmaking there. Orders dried up, the works ran down and then shut, and a town of six and a half thousand people lost the job of half its adults at once. This is the plainest lesson in the whole timeline: a single-industry town does not fail because its workers stopped working.V októbri 1918 vzniklo Československo a pre Krompachy nebol nový štát oslobodením, ale katastrofou. Objednávky vyschli, závod sa utlmil a napokon zatvoril — a mesto so šesťaapoltisíc obyvateľmi stratilo naraz prácu polovice dospelých.

  7. February 1921 · 1971február 1921 · 1971 The Krompachy revoltKrompašská vzbura

In February 1921 hungry workers and their families gathered against the shutdown and the shortage of food, and gendarmes fired into the crowd. Several people were killed. It became a fixed point in Slovak labour history and it is fixed in the town itself: the victims' grave, the memorial and the former administration building of the ironworks on Družstevná street are all protected national cultural monuments. The memorial in front of that building was unveiled in 1971, on the fiftieth anniversary. Sources vary on the exact day of the shooting and on how many died, which is worth knowing about an event only a century old and thoroughly remembered.

In March 1939 Slovakia became a separate state, allied to and dependent on Nazi Germany. The Slovak National Uprising of August 1944 was crushed by German occupation, partisans held out in the Ore Mountains through the winter, and the front reached the Hornád valley at the end of January 1945.V marci 1939 sa Slovensko stalo samostatným štátom, spojencom nacistického Nemecka a závislým od neho. Slovenské národné povstanie z augusta 1944 potlačila nemecká okupácia, partizáni sa cez zimu držali v Rudohorí a front sa dostal do doliny Hornádu koncom januára 1945.

  9. 1948 · 19511948 · 1951 Copper instead of ironMeď namiesto železa

The communist state rebuilt Krompachy as an industrial town all over again, but around a different metal. An electrotechnical plant was begun in 1948, and in 1951 copper works started up again on the old industrial ground below the town. That is why Krompachy still has heavy industry today when most of the Spiš mining towns lost their metal altogether — the choice was made for it, from Bratislava and Prague, in the first years after the war. Blocks of flats went up for the workforce, and the valley filled with the shape of town it still is: a plant, a railway, a road and a river sharing one strip of flat ground.Komunistický štát vybudoval z Krompách priemyselné mesto nanovo — no okolo iného kovu.

  10. since 1993 · 2021od roku 1993 · 2021 Still a works townStále mesto závodu

The copper works came through the change of system and is still the town's largest employer, alongside engineering, wood processing and small manufacturing; everyone else commutes, to Spišská Nová Ves or the hour to Košice. Long-term unemployment has been part of life here since heavy industry contracted, and the population is slowly falling — around 8,500 people now. Above the town the ridge of Plejsy has ski slopes and summer trails, and downstream the Ružín reservoir draws people out from Košice. In Krompachy the industrial past is not nostalgia; it is the frame the present still sits in.Závod na spracovanie medi prežil zmenu režimu a je stále najväčším zamestnávateľom mesta popri strojárstve, drevospracovaní a malej výrobe; ostatní dochádzajú — do Spišskej Novej Vsi alebo hodinu do Košíc. Dlhodobá nezamestnanosť patrí k tunajšiemu životu od čias, keď sa ťažký priemysel zmenšil, a počet obyvateľov pomaly klesá — dnes okolo 8 500 ľudí. Nad mestom má hrebeň Plejsy zjazdovky a letné chodníky a po prúde priťahuje nádrž Ružín ľudí z Košíc. Priemyselná minulosť tu nie je nostalgiou; je rámcom, v ktorom prítomnosť stále sedí.
