The place first appears in writing in 1367 — Vallis Mariana in Latin, Mariatal in German, Máriavölgy in Hungarian, all of them meaning Mary's Valley. It is worth being exact about what a date like that proves: in 1367 the place had a name and somebody had a reason to write it down, not that it was founded that year. People were clearly already walking to the spring. And notice which way round the naming went — normally a village gives its name to its church, but here the church's Virgin gave her name to the village.Prvý raz sa miesto v písomnostiach objavuje v roku 1367 — po latinsky Vallis Mariana, po nemecky Mariatal, po maďarsky Máriavölgy, a všetko to znamená to isté: Máriino údolie. Treba byť presný v tom, čo taký údaj dokazuje: v roku 1367 malo miesto meno a niekto mal dôvod ho zapísať — nie že vtedy vzniklo. K prameňu sa zjavne chodilo už dávno predtým. A všimnime si, ktorým smerom išlo pomenovanie: zvyčajne dedina dá meno svojmu kostolu, tu však Panna Mária z kostola dala meno dedine.
