The oldest Marian pilgrimage place in Slovakia, in a wooded valley of the Little Carpathians barely a quarter of an hour from Bratislava: a holy well, a pilgrimage church with a Pauline monastery beside it, and a Baroque calvary climbing the slope above.
Marianka lies in a narrow wooded valley on the western side of the Little Carpathians, immediately above Stupava and only a few kilometres from the edge of Bratislava. A stream runs down the valley between beech and oak slopes; the village is small, and the pilgrimage buildings take up a good part of it.Marianka leží v úzkej zalesnenej doline na západnej strane Malých Karpát, hneď nad Stupavou a len pár kilometrov od okraja Bratislavy. Dolinou tečie potok medzi bukovými a dubovými svahmi; obec je malá a pútnický areál zaberá jej poriadny kus.
The site begins with water. A spring in the valley was held to be miraculous, and the story told here is of a hermit's carved wooden image of the Virgin hidden in the well during a time of danger and found again afterwards. That statue — small, old and much venerated — is the reason for everything else on the site.
The church and the monastery are traditionally dated to the fourteenth century and credited to Louis I of Hungary, who brought in the Pauline hermits, the one religious order founded in the Hungarian kingdom itself. They held the place for four centuries, until Joseph II dissolved the order in the 1780s. The pilgrimage carried on regardless, which is why it is older and less interrupted than the history of the buildings around it.Kostol a kláštor sa tradične datujú do 14. storočia a pripisujú Ľudovítovi I. Uhorskému, ktorý sem priviedol paulínov — jedinú rehoľu založenú priamo v Uhorskom kráľovstve.
Being this close to Pressburg mattered. Marianka was the nearest pilgrimage of any weight to a capital city, and the Baroque century gave it the full apparatus: a calvary of chapels laid out up the hillside behind the church, and a processional route through the valley.
The pilgrimage church stands at the bottom of the valley with the monastery range attached to it; the interior is Baroque over a Gothic core, and the venerated statue is on the high altar. It is a working church, and services take precedence over sightseeing.Pútnický kostol stojí na dne doliny a je k nemu pripojené kláštorné krídlo; interiér je barokový nad gotickým jadrom a uctievaná soška je na hlavnom oltári. Je to živý kostol a bohoslužby majú prednosť pred prehliadkou.
A short walk up the valley reaches the holy well itself — a small chapel built over the spring, water running from a spout, and people still filling bottles at it. From there the calvary path climbs the wooded slope past its chapels to the top. It is a walk of minutes rather than an ascent, and the beech woods do as much of the work as the architecture.Krátka prechádzka dolinou vedie k samotnej svätej studni — nad prameňom je postavená kaplnka, z výtoku tečie voda a ľudia si ňou dodnes napĺňajú fľaše.
Marianka does not present itself as a monument, because it is not one: it is a place of prayer with a village around it, and the village has become a quiet, well-off commuter settlement for Bratislava. The church, the well and the calvary can be walked around freely, but nothing here is ticketed, staffed or explained, and there is a fair chance of arriving in the middle of a Mass or a procession. The main pilgrimage falls in early September, around the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, and on that weekend the valley is full.
There is no railway. Regional buses run out from Bratislava through Záhorská Bystrica, and by car it is a short signposted turn off the road between the city and Stupava. It is also one of the easiest walks out of the capital: marked trails cross the ridge from the city forest park and drop into the valley.Železnica sem nevedie. Z Bratislavy premávajú regionálne autobusy cez Záhorskú Bystricu a autom ide o krátku značenú odbočku z cesty medzi mestom a Stupavou. Je to zároveň jedna z najľahších túr z hlavného mesta: značené chodníky prechádzajú hrebeň z mestského lesoparku a klesajú do doliny.
