The castle on the ridge is named in writing in 1240 as Rotenstein, German for red stone, and again in 1271 as Piberspurch; a stone castle stood on the site by the middle of the thirteenth century. That order of events matters, because the story usually told about Slovak castles does not fit here. In April 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at the river Slaná and rode through the kingdom until it withdrew the following spring, and King Béla IV's answer was a building programme: stone castles on high ground, everywhere. Most of Slovakia's castles exist because of 1241, not in spite of it — but Červený Kameň was already standing, one link in a chain of border castles running from Bratislava north-east towards Žilina and watching the passes over the Little Carpathians. Väčšina slovenských hradov jestvuje práve pre rok 1241, nie napriek nemu – Červený Kameň však už stál ako jeden článok reťaze pohraničných hradov od Bratislavy na severovýchod k Žiline, ktorá strážila prechody cez Malé Karpaty. Že by ho Mongoli dobyli, doložené nie je.
