The basin of the Rimava has been farmed for thousands of years. Archaeologists have found the cemeteries of the Bronze Age Piliny culture here, later material from the Hallstatt period of the early Iron Age, and objects from the Roman centuries, when the empire's frontier lay on the Danube not far to the south and Roman goods travelled north into country Rome never ruled. Slavs are thought to have settled the valley in the seventh and eighth centuries. None of these people left a written word about themselves — everything we know about them, we dug up.V Rimavskej kotline sa hospodári už tisícročia. Archeológovia tu našli pohrebiská pilinskej kultúry z doby bronzovej, mladší halštatský materiál zo staršej doby železnej aj predmety z rímskych storočí, keď hranica ríše viedla po Dunaji neďaleko na juh a rímsky tovar putoval na sever do krajiny, ktorú Rím nikdy neovládal. Slovania sa v údolí usadili pravdepodobne v siedmom a ôsmom storočí. Nikto z týchto ľudí o sebe nezanechal písané slovo — všetko, čo o nich vieme, sme vykopali.
