On 14 November 1278 the archbishop granted the town municipal privileges — the right to run its own affairs and hold its market under its own law. In 1334 King Charles Robert took the estate for the crown, compensating the archbishop with land elsewhere, and the following year the town received a charter modelled on the law of Buda, the leading town of the kingdom; King Sigismund confirmed it in 1387. A town with Buda's law elected its own council and its own judge, and that is what separated Rimavská Sobota from the villages around it for the next five hundred years.14. novembra 1278 udelil arcibiskup mestu mestské výsady — právo spravovať si svoje veci a držať trh podľa vlastného práva. Roku 1334 vzal kráľ Karol Róbert panstvo pre korunu a arcibiskupa odškodnil pozemkami inde; o rok nato dostalo mesto výsadnú listinu podľa práva Budína, prvého mesta kráľovstva, a kráľ Žigmund ju roku 1387 potvrdil. Mesto s budínskym právom si volilo vlastnú radu aj richtára — a práve to Rimavskú Sobotu na ďalších päťsto rokov odlišovalo od dedín navôkol.
