History of Rimavská SobotaDejiny — Rimavská Sobota

Rimavská Sobota is a town whose name explains itself — the Saturday market on the Rimava. Trade built it, not a castle. It was twice absorbed into the Ottoman Empire, twice ran a whole county from a square far too big for it, and twice in the twentieth century woke up in a different country without moving an inch.

  1. Bronze Age – 5th century ADdoba bronzová – 5. storočie People here long before the nameĽudia tu boli dávno pred menom

The basin of the Rimava has been farmed for thousands of years. Archaeologists have found the cemeteries of the Bronze Age Piliny culture here, later material from the Hallstatt period of the early Iron Age, and objects from the Roman centuries, when the empire's frontier lay on the Danube not far to the south and Roman goods travelled north into country Rome never ruled. Slavs are thought to have settled the valley in the seventh and eighth centuries. None of these people left a written word about themselves — everything we know about them, we dug up.V Rimavskej kotline sa hospodári už tisícročia. Archeológovia tu našli pohrebiská pilinskej kultúry z doby bronzovej, mladší halštatský materiál zo staršej doby železnej aj predmety z rímskych storočí, keď hranica ríše viedla po Dunaji neďaleko na juh a rímsky tovar putoval na sever do krajiny, ktorú Rím nikdy neovládal. Slovania sa v údolí usadili pravdepodobne v siedmom a ôsmom storočí. Nikto z týchto ľudí o sebe nezanechal písané slovo — všetko, čo o nich vieme, sme vykopali.

  2. 10th–13th centuries10. – 13. storočie An archbishop's market townTrhové mesto arcibiskupa

Hungarian settlement reached this country in the tenth and eleventh centuries, and the Rimava valley ended up not in a warrior's hands but in a churchman's: the estate belonged to the Archbishop of Kalocsa, one of the two archbishops of the Hungarian kingdom. That is unusual, and it shaped everything. A church landlord wanted rents and market dues rather than a garrison, so what grew here was a market rather than a fortress — and the market day, Saturday, ended up in the town's name and has stayed there for seven hundred years.Uhorské osídlenie sem dorazilo v desiatom a jedenástom storočí a údolie Rimavy neskončilo v rukách bojovníka, ale cirkevného hodnostára: panstvo patrilo kaločskému arcibiskupovi, jednému z dvoch arcibiskupov Uhorského kráľovstva. To je nezvyčajné a rozhodlo to o všetkom ostatnom. Cirkevný zemepán chcel nájmy a trhové poplatky, nie posádku — vyrástol tu teda trh, a nie pevnosť. A trhový deň, sobota, ostal mestu v mene a drží sa v ňom sedemsto rokov.

  3. 1241–1242 · 12681241 – 1242 · 1268 Burned, and then written downVypálená a potom zapísaná

Slovak accounts say the medieval settlement was destroyed in the Mongol invasion of 1241–42. There were no walls here to stop anybody, so it is very likely — but be careful about what we can actually prove. What is documented is the recovery, not the ruin: the place reappears, and is named for the first time, in a document of 1268 as Rymoa Zumbota. That is the pattern all over Slovakia. The invasion left almost no records of itself; the rebuilding afterwards left a great many.

On 14 November 1278 the archbishop granted the town municipal privileges — the right to run its own affairs and hold its market under its own law. In 1334 King Charles Robert took the estate for the crown, compensating the archbishop with land elsewhere, and the following year the town received a charter modelled on the law of Buda, the leading town of the kingdom; King Sigismund confirmed it in 1387. A town with Buda's law elected its own council and its own judge, and that is what separated Rimavská Sobota from the villages around it for the next five hundred years.14. novembra 1278 udelil arcibiskup mestu mestské výsady — právo spravovať si svoje veci a držať trh podľa vlastného práva. Roku 1334 vzal kráľ Karol Róbert panstvo pre korunu a arcibiskupa odškodnil pozemkami inde; o rok nato dostalo mesto výsadnú listinu podľa práva Budína, prvého mesta kráľovstva, a kráľ Žigmund ju roku 1387 potvrdil.

  5. 15061506 Fire, and a town rebuilt on a gridPožiar a mesto postavené na šachovnici

In 1506 a fire destroyed most of Rimavská Sobota. What happened next is the reason the town looks the way it does: it was laid out again to a plan, said to have been drawn by an Italian architect, on a chequerboard of straight streets around one enormous long square. Very few Slovak towns were replanned in a single go like this. It is worth standing in the middle of that square and realising that its size is a decision somebody made, not an accident of growth.

Rimavská Sobota lived under Ottoman rule twice — from 1553 to 1593, and again from 1596 until the Ottomans were driven out of Hungary in 1686 — as part of the sanjak, the Ottoman district, administered from Fiľakovo. That is more than a century of paying taxes towards Istanbul while the Habsburg emperor demanded the same taxes for himself. Even so the town went on being a town: it was granted a coat of arms in 1592 and in 1601 the right of the sword, meaning its own court could try and execute criminals. A market has to keep order to stay a market, whoever is collecting the tax.

With the frontier gone the town bought its way up the ladder: Hungarian sources date its standing as a free privileged town to 1747, English-language ones to the 1790s, and the difference is probably about which charter you count. Its people were mostly Calvinist, and in 1769 a crowd attacked a Catholic procession; Empress Maria Theresa punished the town by having its Calvinist church pulled down in 1771. From 1784 Rimavská Sobota began serving as a seat of county administration — which is why it has public buildings out of all scale with its size. On 26 December 1805 the Russian general Kutuzov spent a night here, marching his army home after the defeat at Austerlitz.Keď hranica zmizla, mesto sa vykupovalo vyššie a vyššie: maďarské pramene kladú jeho postavenie slobodného výsadného mesta do roku 1747, anglické až do deväťdesiatych rokov 18. storočia — rozdiel je zrejme v tom, ktorú listinu kto počíta. Obyvatelia boli väčšinou kalvíni a roku 1769 napadol dav katolícku procesiu; cisárovná Mária Terézia mesto potrestala tak, že roku 1771 dala kalvínsky kostol zbúrať. Od roku 1784 začala Rimavská Sobota slúžiť ako sídlo stoličnej správy — preto tu stoja úradné budovy neúmerne veľké na mesto tejto veľkosti. 26. decembra 1805 tu prenocoval ruský generál Kutuzov, keď viedol vojsko domov po porážke pri Slavkove.

Cholera struck the town in 1831, in the same epidemic that set off a peasant uprising across the counties of north-eastern Hungary. In 1845 the townspeople elected the poet Sándor Petőfi their honorary judge — an honour rather than a job, but it tells you which way the town was leaning. In the revolution of 1848–49 Rimavská Sobota changed hands repeatedly between Hungarian, Slovak and Russian forces, and in July 1849 the Hungarian commander Artúr Görgey negotiated here with the Russians, shortly before the surrender that ended the war.

On 3 September 1882 an art and archaeology exhibition opened in the town, and out of it grew the Gemer-Malohont Museum, founded by Ján Fábry with three companions — one of the oldest museums in Slovakia. Its members collected everything: minerals, birds, prehistoric graves, folk costume, and whatever they brought home from travelling. In 1910 a local lawyer and traveller, István Süteö-Munkácsi, gave the museum the mummy of an Egyptian woman named Tasheritnetiak, from Abusir el-Meleq; she is still its most famous resident. The museum moved into a disused classicist barracks the same year and opened its permanent display on 18 May 1913.3. septembra 1882 sa v meste otvorila umelecko-archeologická výstava a z nej vyrástlo Gemersko-malohontské múzeum, ktoré založil Ján Fábry s tromi spoločníkmi — jedno z najstarších na Slovensku.

  10. January–July 1919 · 1922január – júl 1919 · 1922 Three flags in seven monthsTri vlajky za sedem mesiacov

Czechoslovak legionaries occupied Rimavská Sobota in January 1919, the forces of the Hungarian Soviet Republic took it in May, and Czechoslovakia had it back by July. Once the border settled, the town lost the thing it had lived on: in 1922 the county of Gemer-Malohont was abolished in the Czechoslovak reorganisation, and the offices went. A town built to administer a county, inside a new state that did not want that county, had to find something else to be — and it never entirely did.V januári 1919 obsadili Rimavskú Sobotu československí legionári, v máji ju prevzali vojská Maďarskej republiky rád a v júli ju mala späť Československá republika.

Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front took the town on 21 December 1944 and Czechoslovakia had it back.

Between 1948 and 1976 the town absorbed one neighbouring village after another and grew from about 28 to nearly 78 square kilometres — on paper the largest change in its history. Industry was brought in deliberately: a sugar factory in 1966, a large meat-processing plant in 1977, engineering and building materials beside them. The population rose from under five thousand in the nineteenth century to nearly twenty thousand by 1980. All of it rested on decisions taken in Bratislava and Prague rather than on anything the town itself owned, and that is exactly why it proved so fragile.V rokoch 1948 až 1976 pohltilo mesto jednu susednú obec za druhou a rozrástlo sa z necelých 28 na takmer 78 štvorcových kilometrov — na papieri najväčšia zmena v jeho dejinách. Priemysel sem priviedli zámerne: roku 1966 cukrovar, roku 1977 veľký mäsokombinát a popri nich strojárstvo a stavebné hmoty.

  13. 1989 – the 1990s1989 – 90. roky Placed industry goes firstPrivezený priemysel odchádza prvý

Industry that has been placed in a town rather than grown out of it is the most exposed when the planning ends, and after 1989 that is what happened here. The plants shrank or closed, and the district of Rimavská Sobota has had one of the highest unemployment rates in Slovakia ever since. Whole families came to depend on work found elsewhere in the country or abroad. It is worth being blunt about this with students: nothing about the land or the people caused it — the town was given an economy it did not choose, and then the economy was taken away.
