After 1989 the state factories lost their guaranteed customers, and most of Lučenec's heavy industry did not survive the decade. The enamelware works, the machinery plants and the building-materials firms shrank or shut, and this district became one of the parts of Slovakia where finding work locally is hardest. The honest way to describe the 1990s here is that the town kept its people and lost their jobs. Commuting — to Bratislava for the working week, or abroad — became an ordinary way to keep a household going in Novohrad, and it still is.Po roku 1989 stratili štátne podniky istých odberateľov a väčšina lučeneckého ťažkého priemyslu deväťdesiate roky neprežila. Smaltovňa, strojárne aj závody na stavebné hmoty sa zmenšili alebo zanikli a tento okres sa zaradil medzi tie časti Slovenska, kde sa práca doma hľadá najťažšie. Poctivo povedané: mesto si ľudí udržalo, ale prišlo o ich prácu. Cestovanie za robotou — na týždňovky do Bratislavy alebo do zahraničia — sa v Novohrade stalo bežným spôsobom, ako uživiť domácnosť, a je ním dodnes.
