In 1442 the town was taken by the Bohemian troops of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, who held much of what is now Slovakia for the boy-king Ladislaus. In 1451 Jiskra's men fought the army of János Hunyadi — regent of Hungary and the most feared soldier of his day — at a fortified camp the Hussites had thrown up on a hill above the town, and Jiskra won. The Battle of Lučenec is the one time this quiet market town decided something for the whole kingdom. A generation later, in 1472, the townspeople issued the first document of their own town council: Lučenec was governing itself.Roku 1442 mesto obsadili české vojská Jána Jiskru z Brandýsa, ktorý pre maloletého kráľa Ladislava držal veľkú časť dnešného Slovenska. Roku 1451 sa Jiskrovi muži stretli s vojskom Jána Huňadyho — uhorského gubernátora a najobávanejšieho vojvodcu svojej doby — pri opevnenom tábore, ktorý si husiti vybudovali na kopci nad mestom, a Jiskra vyhral. Bitka pri Lučenci je jediný raz, keď toto pokojné trhové mesto rozhodlo o niečom pre celé kráľovstvo. O generáciu neskôr, roku 1472, vydala lučenská mestská rada svoju prvú vlastnú listinu: mesto si už spravovalo samo seba.
