Lučenec appears for the first time in a charter of King Béla IV dated 3 August 1247, under the name terra Luchunch, 'the land of Lučenec'. That date matters. The Mongol armies had swept through the Hungarian kingdom in 1241 and 1242, and the decades afterwards were spent rebuilding, granting land out again and writing it all down — which is why so many places in Slovakia are first recorded in the 1240s and 1250s. An older and much less certain note puts a chapel here in 1128, and a Cistercian house called Vallis lucida is recorded around 1190 at Opatová, now part of the town. Being first written down in 1247 does not mean nobody lived here before; it means this is when a clerk finally wrote the name.Lučenec sa po prvý raz spoľahlivo objavuje v listine kráľa Bela IV. z 3. augusta 1247 pod menom terra Luchunch, teda „zem Lučenca“. Ten dátum niečo znamená. Mongolské vojská prešli Uhorským kráľovstvom v rokoch 1241 a 1242 a nasledujúce desaťročia sa venovali obnove, novému rozdeľovaniu pôdy a jej zapisovaniu — preto je toľko slovenských miest a obcí prvý raz doložených práve v štyridsiatych a päťdesiatych rokoch 13. storočia. Staršia a oveľa menej istá zmienka kladie do Lučenca kaplnku už roku 1128 a okolo roku 1190 sa v dnešnej Opatovej spomína cisterciánsky dom Vallis lucida. Prvý zápis z roku 1247 teda neznamená, že tu predtým nikto nežil — znamená, že vtedy pisár konečne zapísal to meno.
