History of LučenecDejiny — Lučenec

Lučenec has no castle and never had walls worth the name, and that is the key to its history: an open market town on the Novohrad plain that took whatever the frontier did to it, was burned to the ground in 1849, and rebuilt itself in one nineteenth-century push.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. 3 August 12473. augusta 1247 The first certain mention — just after the MongolsPrvá istá zmienka — tesne po Mongoloch

Lučenec appears for the first time in a charter of King Béla IV dated 3 August 1247, under the name terra Luchunch, 'the land of Lučenec'. That date matters. The Mongol armies had swept through the Hungarian kingdom in 1241 and 1242, and the decades afterwards were spent rebuilding, granting land out again and writing it all down — which is why so many places in Slovakia are first recorded in the 1240s and 1250s. An older and much less certain note puts a chapel here in 1128, and a Cistercian house called Vallis lucida is recorded around 1190 at Opatová, now part of the town. Being first written down in 1247 does not mean nobody lived here before; it means this is when a clerk finally wrote the name. Staršia a oveľa menej istá zmienka kladie do Lučenca kaplnku už roku 1128 a okolo roku 1190 sa v dnešnej Opatovej spomína cisterciánsky dom Vallis lucida. Prvý zápis z roku 1247 teda neznamená, že tu predtým nikto nežil — znamená, že vtedy pisár konečne zapísal to meno.

  2. 1327 · 13931327 · 1393 Village or town? The charter could not decideDedina, alebo mesto? Listina sa nevedela rozhodnúť

A document of 1327 calls the place villa seu civitas Luchunch — 'the village or town of Lučenec' — which is a clerk hedging his bets, and it also mentions defences around it. By then Lučenec had its own parish. In 1393 the estate was divided among six brothers of the Losonci family, the noble house that took its name from this place and held it for generations. What Lučenec never got was a castle. The lords of Novohrad sat on rocks — at Fiľakovo, at Divín, at Modrý Kameň — while the market town sat in the open, and that single fact decided a great deal of what happened to it later. A práve to rozhodlo o veľkej časti toho, čo ho neskôr čakalo.

  3. 1442 · 1451 · 14721442 · 1451 · 1472 Jiskra's Hussites beat a regent hereJiskrovi husiti tu porazili gubernátora

In 1442 the town was taken by the Bohemian troops of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, who held much of what is now Slovakia for the boy-king Ladislaus. In 1451 Jiskra's men fought the army of János Hunyadi — regent of Hungary and the most feared soldier of his day — at a fortified camp the Hussites had thrown up on a hill above the town, and Jiskra won. The Battle of Lučenec is the one time this quiet market town decided something for the whole kingdom. A generation later, in 1472, the townspeople issued the first document of their own town council: Lučenec was governing itself.

  4. 1554 · 1593 · 1596–16861554 · 1593 · 1596 – 1686 An open town on an Ottoman frontierOtvorené mesto na osmanskej hranici

When the castle of Fiľakovo fell to the Ottomans in 1554, Lučenec fell with it — an open market town cannot refuse a garrison twenty kilometres away. An Ottoman tax register of that same year counts eighty taxpaying households here. Imperial troops recovered the district in 1593, the Ottomans took it back in 1596, and Lučenec paid taxes towards Istanbul, on and off, until the Ottomans were finally driven out of Hungary in 1686. Notice what that meant in practice: for well over a century the people of this town owed two masters, one in Buda and one in Vienna, and were raided by both.Keď roku 1554 padol do osmanských rúk fiľakovský hrad, padol s ním aj Lučenec — otvorené trhové mesto nemôže povedať nie posádke vzdialenej dvadsať kilometrov. Osmanský daňový súpis z toho istého roku tu ráta osemdesiat poddanských domácností. Cisárske vojská okolie získali späť roku 1593, Osmani ho roku 1596 opäť obsadili a Lučenec s prestávkami odvádzal dane do Istanbulu až do vyhnania Osmanov z Uhorska roku 1686. Všimnime si, čo to znamenalo v praxi: vyše storočia mali ľudia v tomto meste dvoch pánov, jedného v Budíne a druhého vo Viedni — a plienili ich obaja.

  5. 1608 · 1622 · 16401608 · 1622 · 1640 Reformation, and a prince who burned the townReformácia a knieža, ktoré mesto vypálilo

The Reformation took hold here early, and by 1608 the Calvinists had taken over the parish church; most of the townspeople had become Calvinist. It did not protect them. In 1622 the army of Gabriel Bethlen, the Protestant prince of Transylvania then in revolt against the Habsburg emperor, burned Lučenec — and burned its charters with it, which is why the town later had to ask for its rights all over again. Bethlen is also said to have kept the Holy Crown of Hungary here that year. In 1640 the townspeople put a wall around the church, the only thing they could realistically defend.Reformácia sa tu ujala skoro a roku 1608 prevzali farský kostol kalvíni; väčšina mešťanov už vtedy bola kalvínska. Neochránilo ich to. Roku 1622 vojsko Gabriela Betlena, protestantského sedmohradského kniežaťa vo vzbure proti habsburskému cisárovi, Lučenec vypálilo — a s ním aj mestské listiny, preto muselo mesto neskôr žiadať o svoje práva odznova.

  6. 1682 · 16951682 · 1695 The county comes down off the rockStolica schádza zo skaly

In 1682 the fortress at Fiľakovo was blown up and never rebuilt, and the business of Novohrad county came down off the rock to the towns of the plain. Slovak sources say Lučenec became the county's new seat; Hungarian ones name Balassagyarmat, further south and today in Hungary. The safe statement is that the offices came down to the plain and never went back up. In 1695 the emperor Leopold I granted Lučenec market rights — fairs, open trading and the money that comes with them. That is the turn that made the modern town: the frontier had moved south, the danger went with it, and a place whose only asset was a crossroads could finally use it.Roku 1682 vyhodili fiľakovskú pevnosť do vzduchu a nikto ju už neobnovil; správa Novohradskej stolice zišla zo skaly dolu do miest na rovine.

  7. 24 March 1849 · 9 August 184924. marca 1849 · 9. augusta 1849 Burned by the RussiansVypálený Rusmi

In the Hungarian revolution of 1848–49 Lučenec backed the revolution. On 24 March 1849 a revolutionary force under Lajos Beniczky beat an imperial detachment at the town. The bill came in August. The Habsburg emperor had asked Tsar Nicholas I of Russia for help and Russian armies marched into Hungary; on 9 August 1849 they burned Lučenec in reprisal. Almost the whole town went, the Calvinist church with it — it was rebuilt in neo-Gothic form in 1853. Everything you see in the centre of Lučenec today is younger than that fire, and that is why the streets are wide and the public buildings all look like brothers.V maďarskej revolúcii rokov 1848 – 1849 stál Lučenec na strane revolúcie. 24. marca 1849 porazil pri meste revolučný oddiel Lajosa Beniczkého cisárske vojsko. Účet prišiel v auguste. Habsburský cisár požiadal o pomoc ruského cára Mikuláša I. a ruské vojská vtiahli do Uhorska; 9. augusta 1849 Lučenec z odvety vypálili.

  8. 1846–1847 · 1865 · 1871 · 19101846 – 1847 · 1865 · 1871 · 1910 The railway, and a town of factoriesŽeleznica a mesto tovární

A bank and a newspaper had already been founded in 1846 and a Calvinist grammar school in 1847. The telegraph reached Lučenec in 1865 and the railway in 1871, on the line from Budapest through the town to Žilina and on to Ostrava. A market town on a railway becomes an industrial town, and this one did: tanneries, a brickworks, an agricultural machinery works, and above all the enamelware factory whose pots and basins carried the name of Lučenec across the monarchy. A new town hall went up in the 1890s and the first permanent cinema opened in 1910. This is the town that the fire of 1849 made possible.Banka a noviny tu vznikli už roku 1846, kalvínske gymnázium roku 1847. Telegraf dorazil do Lučenca roku 1865 a železnica roku 1871 — trať z Budapešti cez mesto do Žiliny a ďalej do Ostravy.

  10. 1950s–1980s · 196850. – 80. roky · 1968 Flats and factoriesByty a továrne

The communist decades built the Lučenec most of its people still live in: new blocks of flats, a hospital, schools and enlarged factories making enamelware, machinery, food and building materials. Older things went to make room, among them the Art Nouveau Café Corso, which older residents still mention with regret. In 1968 Warsaw Pact troops entered the town, as they entered the whole country, to end the Prague Spring.Komunistické desaťročia postavili ten Lučenec, v ktorom väčšina jeho obyvateľov býva dodnes: nové sídliská, nemocnicu, školy a rozšírené závody na smalt, stroje, potraviny a stavebné hmoty. Staršie veci museli ustúpiť, medzi nimi secesná kaviareň Corso, ktorú starší Lučenčania spomínajú s ľútosťou dodnes. Roku 1968 vstúpili do mesta, tak ako do celej krajiny, vojská Varšavskej zmluvy a ukončili Pražskú jar.

  11. 1989 – the 1990s1989 – 90. roky The factories closeTovárne zatvárajú

After 1989 the state factories lost their guaranteed customers, and most of Lučenec's heavy industry did not survive the decade. The enamelware works, the machinery plants and the building-materials firms shrank or shut, and this district became one of the parts of Slovakia where finding work locally is hardest. The honest way to describe the 1990s here is that the town kept its people and lost their jobs. Commuting — to Bratislava for the working week, or abroad — became an ordinary way to keep a household going in Novohrad, and it still is.Po roku 1989 stratili štátne podniky istých odberateľov a väčšina lučeneckého ťažkého priemyslu deväťdesiate roky neprežila.
