Forty years of communismŠtyridsať rokov komunizmu
KrupinaKrupina
Under communism Krupina became what most small Slovak towns became: farmland pooled into cooperatives, blocks of flats on the edge of the old streets, and work found by commuting north to the factories of Zvolen and Banská Bystrica. In 1960 a nationwide reorganisation abolished the Krupina district — the same reform that abolished the Modrý Kameň district on the far side of the plateau. What the town did gain was medicine: a maternity unit in 1953 and a hospital on 27 February 1966. The Vartovka, four centuries after it was built to watch for raiders, was fitted out as a small observatory, and watches something else now.
