The name first turns up in a document of 1135, attached to the river rather than to a town — which is a fact about a charter, not about when people arrived. What grew here sat on the via magna, the "great road" that ran from the Baltic down towards the Adriatic, at the point where the Štiavnica hills give way to the Krupina plateau. From the late twelfth century the Hont-Pázmány lords — the clan whose name the whole county of Hont carries — brought in German settlers, and King Andrew II settled Saxon miners here in the thirteenth century.
