The oldest evidence of digging below ground here comes from the ninth century — the century of Great Moravia, the Slavic state that ruled this part of the Danube basin before Hungary existed. There was no town then and no charter, only people following gold into a hillside. Gold in these mountains sits both in the streams, where it can be washed out, and in hard quartz veins, which have to be broken out of the rock; the second kind is what built Kremnica.
