On 17 November 1328 King Charles Robert of Anjou granted Kremnica the rights of a free royal mining and minting town, and founded a mint here in the same act. 'Free royal' meant that the townspeople answered to the king and to nobody in between: their own elected council, their own judge, their own court. The king was not being generous. Gold came out of these hills, and whoever controlled the coining of it controlled the money of the whole kingdom. The town went on collecting rights — the power to hang criminals in 1400, weekly markets in 1425, annual fairs in 1695 — each one another piece of self-government.17. novembra 1328 udelil kráľ Karol Róbert z rodu Anjou Kremnici práva slobodného kráľovského banského a minciarskeho mesta a tou istou listinou tu založil mincovňu. „Slobodné kráľovské“ znamenalo, že mešťania sa zodpovedali kráľovi a nikomu medzi tým: mali vlastnú volenú radu, vlastného richtára a vlastný súd. Kráľ nebol štedrý, ale prezieravý. Z týchto vrchov šlo zlato a kto ovládal jeho razbu, ovládal peniaze celého kráľovstva. Mesto zbieralo práva ďalej — hrdelné právo v roku 1400, trhové v roku 1425, jarmočné v roku 1695 —, vždy ďalší kus samosprávy.
