After 1989 the spa left state hands and the guaranteed flow of patients on state referral thinned out. Slovak health insurance still pays for medical stays, but for far fewer of them, and every spa in the country had to learn to sell to paying guests instead. A town of this size has no industrial base to fall back on: it stands or falls on the spa's occupancy, and that has been true every year since.Po roku 1989 prešli kúpele zo štátnych rúk a istý prísun pacientov na štátne odporúčanie sa stenčil. Zdravotné poisťovne liečebné pobyty stále preplácajú, no oveľa menej, a všetky kúpele v krajine sa museli naučiť predávať samoplatcom. Mesto tejto veľkosti nemá priemyselné zázemie, na ktoré by sa dalo spoľahnúť: stojí a padá s obsadenosťou kúpeľov, a platí to každý rok odvtedy.
