Dudince is one of the smallest towns in Slovakia and it exists for one reason: water that comes out of the ground warm, fizzing with carbon dioxide and carrying hydrogen sulphide as well. People were cutting bathing pits into the travertine here long before anyone wrote the place down — and yet the spa itself, the sanatoria and the park, is barely sixty years old. Ľudia tu tesali kúpacie jamy do travertínu dávno predtým, než toto miesto niekto zapísal — a napriek tomu majú samotné kúpele, liečebné domy a park, sotva šesťdesiat rokov.

Around the springs the travertine — stone laid down by the mineral water itself — is pitted with small basins cut into the rock. Counts vary: about twenty-two by one description, around thirty by another, the lower ones said to have been for ordinary soldiers and the upper ones for their officers. Local tradition calls them the Roman baths. Roman troops certainly operated north of the Danube, but there is no proof any of them ever used these pits, the dating is not settled, and in later centuries the basins were used for retting hemp. They are the oldest visible thing in the town and nobody can tell you how old they are.
The village first appears in writing in 1284, in the form Dyud, held by local noble families. Later it belonged to the Földváry family, in the eighteenth century to the Szulyovszkys, and after them to the Zmeskalls and the Oberndorfs. This is ordinary Hont county history: a small village of a few dozen households, changing landlords by marriage and inheritance. In all these centuries nobody thought the warm water was worth building anything on.Prvý raz sa dedina objavuje v písomnostiach v roku 1284, v podobe Dyud, v rukách zemianskych rodov.
After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the frontier moved north, and when the small castle at Drégely fell in 1552 it ran through the Ipeľ hills a short ride south of here. Villages in a frontier zone paid twice: a tax to the Ottoman treasury, and dues to a Hungarian landlord who had moved north but had not given up his claim. Krupina, up the road, was fortified and garrisoned as a frontier town. That was the world a village of this size lived in for roughly a hundred and thirty years.
In 1777 Heinrich Johann von Crantz, a physician in Habsburg service, published the first official written description of the water here as a healing spring, under the name Gyógy. This was the age when the monarchy was surveying everything it owned — mines, forests, roads, mineral waters — and writing it all into books. Being written into a book is how a village spring becomes a resource. Nothing was built on the strength of it for another hundred and twenty years.V roku 1777 uverejnil Heinrich Johann von Crantz, lekár v habsburských službách, prvý úradný písomný opis tunajšej vody ako liečivého prameňa, pod menom Gyógy.
In 1828 the village had 19 houses and 112 inhabitants. That is worth stopping on: the town that today has hundreds of hotel beds was, less than two hundred years ago, a couple of dozen roofs by a stream. Through the nineteenth century, while Piešťany, Sliač and Bardejov were being built up into famous spas, nothing at all was built here. The water was the same water; what was missing was a road, a railway and somebody with capital.V roku 1828 mala dedina 19 domov a 112 obyvateľov.
The change began with a decree of 23 January 1894 that officially recognised the Dudince water as healing and put a protection zone around the springs on the Gestenec hill. Building followed: in 1900 Hugo Oberndorff opened the first open bath at the eastern springs, and in 1907 Filip Gutmann built one at the western springs. From 1909 the mineral water was bottled and sold, which went on until 1924. Some accounts date the first open-air bath and drinking hall to 1909 rather than 1900, so the exact order of these first buildings is not certain. Niektoré pramene kladú prvý letný kúpeľ a pitnú halu do roku 1909, nie 1900, takže presné poradie týchto prvých stavieb nie je isté.
In 1918, the year Czechoslovakia was founded, Koloman Brázzay drilled a bore that produced what became the main bathing basin, the Veľký kúpeľný. Between the wars the spa was run on lease rather than owned outright — Július Unterberger held the lease until 1938 — and it stayed small: a local bath in a village, not a national institution. Everything about it was still improvised, and every part of it would be swept away within a decade.V roku 1918, keď vzniklo Československo, navŕtal Koloman Brázzay vrt, z ktorého sa stal hlavný kúpeľný bazén, Veľký kúpeľný. Medzi vojnami sa kúpele prevádzkovali v prenájme, nie vo vlastníctve — Július Unterberger držal nájom do roku 1938 — a zostali malé: dedinský kúpeľ, nie národná ustanovizeň. Všetko na nich bolo provizórne a všetko z toho malo byť do desiatich rokov zmetené.
The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 handed southern Slovakia to Hungary, and the new line was drawn just south of Dudince. Šahy went to Hungary, and so did Hokovce, the next village down the road, occupied on 9 November 1938 by part of the 15th infantry regiment of the Hungarian royal army. Dudince stayed on the Slovak side, so an ordinary country road became an international frontier overnight and the village found itself in a border zone. The old order returned only in 1945.Prvá viedenská arbitráž z 2. novembra 1938 odovzdala južné Slovensko Maďarsku a nová čiara bola vedená tesne južne od Dudiniec.
The spa was nationalised in 1948. Then between 1953 and 1958 a hydrogeological survey drilled into the rock, and the borehole known as S-3 struck a strong flow of mineral water. That is the moment modern Dudince becomes possible: enough water, under its own pressure, to supply a real spa rather than a village bath. A new entrance building went up in 1957–58 and the main basin was enlarged. The engineering came first; the town came after it.V roku 1948 kúpele zoštátnili. Potom v rokoch 1953 až 1958 navŕtal hydrogeologický prieskum skalu a vrt označený S-3 zachytil silný prítok minerálnej vody. V rokoch 1957 – 58 pribudla nová vstupná budova a hlavný bazén rozšírili. Najprv prišla technika, mesto až po nej.
From 1966 the state developed the place as a full resort. Sanatoria went up through the 1970s and 1980s, a park was laid out around the drinking pavilion, and the settlement was raised to a town late in the socialist period — which is why almost every building here is younger than the people staying in it. Since the 1970s the town has also hosted the Dudinská päťdesiatka, an international fifty-kilometre race walk that brings the world's best walkers to a town otherwise devoted to sitting still.
After 1989 the spa left state hands and the guaranteed flow of patients on state referral thinned out. Slovak health insurance still pays for medical stays, but for far fewer of them, and every spa in the country had to learn to sell to paying guests instead. A town of this size has no industrial base to fall back on: it stands or falls on the spa's occupancy, and that has been true every year since. Zdravotné poisťovne liečebné pobyty stále preplácajú, no oveľa menej, a všetky kúpele v krajine sa museli naučiť predávať samoplatcom.
Since 1993 Dudince has been one of the smallest towns in the Slovak Republic. The frontier that appeared here in 1938 and returned in 1945 became an internal European border when Slovakia and Hungary both joined the EU in 2004, and stopped being a checkpoint at all in 2007, when the two countries entered the Schengen area. Šahy is a dozen kilometres away and you drive to it without stopping. For a border village, that is the largest change in ninety years.
