After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the frontier moved north, and when the small castle at Drégely fell in 1552 it ran through the Ipeľ hills a short ride south of here. Villages in a frontier zone paid twice: a tax to the Ottoman treasury, and dues to a Hungarian landlord who had moved north but had not given up his claim. Krupina, up the road, was fortified and garrisoned as a frontier town.
