The village was founded in the early fourteenth century under German settlement law — the arrangement by which a landowner hired a šoltýs, a settlement agent, to bring in colonists, clear forest and lay out holdings, in exchange for years free of dues and a hereditary office for himself. The name says exactly that: Freiwald in German, free forest, meaning either unclaimed woodland or woodland exempt from tax. It belonged to the Lietava estate, and everything about the place, starting with its name, is a record of people cutting a living out of trees.Obec vznikla začiatkom 14. storočia na nemeckom, takzvanom zákupnom práve — zemepán poveril šoltýsa, aby priviedol osadníkov, vyklčoval les a rozmeral usadlosti; osadníci za to dostali roky bez dávok a šoltýs dedičný úrad. Meno hovorí presne to isté: po nemecky Freiwald, slobodný les, teda les neobsadený alebo oslobodený od dávok. Obec patrila k lietavskému panstvu a všetko na nej, počnúc menom, je záznamom o ľuďoch, ktorí si obživu vyrúbali zo stromov.
