Rajecká Lesná lies in a bowl of wooded hills at the southern end of the Rajec valley, under the western ridges of the Malá Fatra, some ten kilometres beyond Rajec and about half an hour from Žilina. It is a small village whose centre is its church and the open ground in front of it, laid out for crowds far larger than the place itself.Rajecká Lesná leží v kotline zalesnených kopcov na južnom konci Rajeckej doliny pod západnými hrebeňmi Malej Fatry, asi desať kilometrov za Rajcom a pol hodiny od Žiliny. Je to malá obec, ktorej stredom je kostol a voľné priestranstvo pred ním, vymerané pre zástupy oveľa väčšie, než je obec sama.

The village was called Frivald into the twentieth century, and the older name still turns up in books and on old maps.Obec sa až do 20. storočia volala Frivald a starší názov sa dodnes objavuje v knihách a na starých mapách.

Why it is herePrečo práve tu

The pilgrimage is the older of the two things the village is known for. A Marian devotion has been kept here since the Middle Ages, focused on a carved Gothic Madonna in the church, and for centuries people walked into this valley on foot for the Marian feasts — which is why a village of this size has a church and a square of that scale.Staršou z dvoch vecí, ktorými je obec známa, je púť. Mariánska úcta sa tu udržiava od stredoveku, sústredená na vyrezávanú gotickú Madonu v kostole, a ľudia sem po stáročia chodili do doliny pešo na mariánske sviatky — preto má obec tejto veľkosti taký kostol a také priestranstvo.

The second reason is modern and the work of one man. The wood-carver Jozef Pekara spent more than a decade cutting the Slovak Bethlehem, and what he made is not a nativity of Bethlehem at all but a nativity of Slovakia: the holy family set among Slovak buildings, Slovak landscape and Slovak trades, with scenes from the country's history worked in along the sides.Druhým dôvodom je novodobé dielo jedného človeka. Rezbár Jozef Pekara vyrezával Slovenský betlehem viac než desať rokov a to, čo vytvoril, nie je betlehem z Betlehema, ale betlehem Slovenska: svätá rodina je zasadená medzi slovenské stavby, slovenskú krajinu a slovenské remeslá a po stranách sú votkané výjavy z dejín krajiny.

The two things sit side by side and explain each other. A village that had been receiving pilgrims for centuries was the natural place to put a work of devotion that took a lifetime's skill, and the Bethlehem has since brought in a second, quite different public.Obe veci stoja vedľa seba a vysvetľujú sa navzájom. Obec, ktorá po stáročia prijímala pútnikov, bola prirodzeným miestom pre dielo zbožnosti, aké si vyžadovalo celoživotnú zručnosť — a betlehem odvtedy priviedol druhé, celkom iné publikum.

What you actually seeČo naozaj uvidíte

The Bethlehem fills a hall beside the church: roughly eight metres of carved landscape, several metres deep, with something close to three hundred figures in it, about half of them driven by a mechanism. Woodcutters saw, a smith strikes, carts and flocks move through the scenery, and among the carved hills stand Bratislava Castle, Spiš Castle and the peak of Kriváň, so that the whole country is compressed into one room.Betlehem vypĺňa sálu vedľa kostola: zhruba osem metrov vyrezávanej krajiny, niekoľko metrov hlbokej, s takmer tromi stovkami figúr, z ktorých približne polovicu poháňa mechanizmus. Drevorubači pília, kováč kuje, cez scenériu sa pohybujú vozy a stáda a medzi vyrezanými kopcami stoja Bratislavský hrad, Spišský hrad a štít Kriváňa — celá krajina je stlačená do jednej miestnosti.

It is shown in short sittings with the mechanism running and a spoken commentary, so viewing is timed rather than continuous, and there is an admission charge. Half an hour covers it, and it repays looking at the carving close up as well as at the movement.Ukazuje sa v krátkych vstupoch so spusteným mechanizmom a hovoreným komentárom, takže prehliadka je časovaná, nie priebežná, a platí sa vstupné. Pol hodiny stačí a oplatí sa pozerať zblízka aj na samotnú rezbu, nielen na pohyb.

The pilgrimage church next door is the other half of the visit — a plain, well-kept interior with the Madonna at its centre, and the main pilgrimage falling around the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin in September, when the square in front is what it was built for.Druhou polovicou návštevy je pútnický kostol vedľa — jednoduchý, dobre udržiavaný interiér s Madonou v strede — a hlavná púť pripadá na sviatok Narodenia Panny Márie v septembri, keď priestranstvo pred ním slúži tomu, na čo bolo postavené.

Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen

The church is a working parish and pilgrimage church, not an exhibit: services come first, and on feast days the village belongs to the pilgrims. The Bethlehem has fixed viewing times and is at its busiest in Advent and over Christmas, when a good part of the Rajec valley comes to see it; out of season the village is very quiet indeed.Kostol je fungujúcim farským a pútnickým kostolom, nie exponátom: bohoslužby majú prednosť a cez sviatky obec patrí pútnikom. Betlehem má pevné časy prehliadok a najviac ľudí ho vidí v advente a cez Vianoce, keď sa naň príde pozrieť dobrá časť Rajeckej doliny; mimo sezóny je v obci naozaj ticho.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Buses run up the valley from Žilina through Rajecké Teplice and Rajec; the branch railway ends at Rajec, so the last stretch is by bus or road. By car it is the valley road south from Žilina to its far end.Autobusy premávajú dolinou zo Žiliny cez Rajecké Teplice a Rajec; odbočná železničná trať končí v Rajci, takže posledný úsek sa ide autobusom alebo autom. Autom je to dolinová cesta na juh zo Žiliny až na jej koniec.
