People chose this spot long before anyone called it a town, and for the obvious reason: two rivers meet here, the Váh coming down the basin and the Belá coming out of the Western Tatras, and whoever holds the confluence holds the way into both valleys. A Celtic hillfort stood on the site, and before it people of the Púchov culture — the Iron Age population of these northern valleys — were settled here; the proof is a find of seventy burial urns on what is now the Belanská housing estate. They had probably come from three older hillforts near Podtureň, just downstream. Every later thing in this town, from a castle to a sawmill, is built on the same logic those people used.Ľudia si toto miesto vybrali dávno predtým, než ho niekto nazval mestom, a z celkom zrejmého dôvodu: stretávajú sa tu dve rieky — Váh tečúci kotlinou a Belá vytekajúca zo Západných Tatier — a kto drží sútok, drží vstup do oboch dolín. Stálo tu keltské hradisko a pred ním sa na tom istom mieste usadili ľudia púchovskej kultúry, obyvateľstvo doby železnej v týchto severných dolinách; dokladom je nález sedemdesiatich popolnicových urien na dnešnom sídlisku Belanská. Prišli pravdepodobne z troch starších hradísk pri Podturni kúsok po prúde. Všetko neskoršie v tomto meste, od hradu po pílu, stojí na tej istej úvahe, akou sa riadili oni.
