Ask around a Slovak castle what wrecked it and you will usually be told the Turks did. Here the record says something else: the castle was damaged during the anti-Habsburg uprisings of the seventeenth century, and its oldest part was never rebuilt afterwards. Which of the risings did it — there were several between the 1670s and 1711, when Hungarian nobles rose against the emperor in Vienna again and again — the usual accounts do not say, and it is more honest to leave that open than to guess. What is certain is who it was not. This was a civil war inside the kingdom: the men who damaged these walls spoke the same languages as the men holding them.Keď sa pri slovenskom hrade spýtate, kto ho zničil, väčšinou počujete, že Turci.
