The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie

After Mohács in 1526 the Ottomans took the middle of the kingdom and the frontier settled a short way to the south and east. The Žitný ostrov was never occupied: the fortress of Komárno downstream and the Danube's own arms kept the Ottoman armies out. That did not make it safe, because raiding parties crossed, and it certainly did not make it rich. The tax book of 1553 counts just twenty-three taxable households in Bős. By 1565 the place is recorded as two villages side by side, Magyarbős and Németbős, after German settlers were brought in to fill the empty ground.
