History of Trenčianske TepliceDejiny — Trenčianske Teplice

Trenčianske Teplice exists because hot sulphur water comes out of the ground in a closed side valley of the Strážov Hills. For six hundred years whoever held Trenčín Castle held the water; then a Viennese banking family bought it and built a resort around it; and between the wars Czechoslovak architects turned this very small town into one of the most important places in the country for modern architecture.Trenčianske Teplice existujú preto, lebo v uzavretej bočnej doline Strážovských vrchov vyviera zo zeme horúca sírna voda. Šesťsto rokov patrila voda tomu, kto držal Trenčiansky hrad; potom ju kúpila viedenská bankárska rodina a vybudovala okolo nej kúpele; a medzi vojnami spravili českí a slovenskí architekti z tohto celkom malého mesta jedno z najdôležitejších miest modernej architektúry v krajine.

  1. first centuries ADprvé storočia po Kristovi Quadi, Marcomanni, and a Roman inscriptionKvádi, Markomani a rímsky nápis

The Germanic Quadi and Marcomanni lived in this country in the first centuries after Christ, and warm springs in a wooded valley are not something people overlook. Whether the Roman legions used them we do not know — the famous Roman inscription of AD 179, cut into the castle rock at Trenčín about fifteen kilometres away, records a garrison and a victory and says nothing at all about bathing. That inscription is still the oldest piece of writing about any place in Slovakia, and it is how we know Roman soldiers wintered this far north of the Danube.Germánski Kvádi a Markomani žili v tejto krajine v prvých storočiach po Kristovi a horúce pramene v zalesnenej doline človek neprehliadne. Či ich používali rímske légie, nevieme — slávny rímsky nápis z roku 179, vytesaný do hradnej skaly v asi pätnásť kilometrov vzdialenom Trenčíne, hovorí o posádke a o víťazstve a o kúpaní ani slovo.

  2. 12471247 The springs belong to the castlePramene patria hradu

The springs appear in writing for the first time in 1247, six years after the Mongol invasion, when Béla IV was reorganising his whole kingdom and putting land into the hands of men who would build castles on it. From the thirteenth century to the nineteenth, the land here with its thermal water belonged to whoever held Trenčín Castle. That single fact explains six hundred years of the spa's history: this was never an independent town with a charter of its own, it was an asset on a castle's estate, and it prospered or was neglected according to what its lord wanted from it.Pramene sa v písomnostiach prvý raz spomínajú roku 1247, šesť rokov po vpáde Mongolov, keď Belo IV. prestavoval celé kráľovstvo a rozdával pôdu tým, čo na nej postavia hrady.

  3. late 16th century to 1835koniec 16. storočia – 1835 Two hundred and forty-one years of one familyDvestoštyridsaťjeden rokov jedného rodu

The Illésházy family held Trenčín Castle and its spa for 241 years, from the end of the sixteenth century until 1835. That is an unusually long run for one family in Hungary, and it is why the baths here grew from holes in the ground where sick people sat into a place with buildings, an income and a reputation across the kingdom. The Ottoman wars and the noble revolts went past in the valley below. A spa is not a fortress, and nobody besieges water; it kept coming out of the rock at the same temperature the whole time.

  4. from 1835od roku 1835 The Sinas buy the waterSinovci kupujú vodu

In 1835 the spa was bought by Georg Sina, a Greek banker in Vienna, and the Sina family did to it what nineteenth-century money did to spas everywhere: rebuilt it, modernised it, and made it fashionable. His son Simon put up a hotel and enlarged the park that is still the centre of the town — the bathhouses here stand among mature trees because a nineteenth-century owner planted them. Slovakia's spas were remade in exactly these decades by exactly this kind of owner; Piešťany and Bardejov have the same story with different names in it.Roku 1835 kúpil kúpele Juraj Sina, grécky bankár usadený vo Viedni, a Sinovci s nimi urobili to, čo peniaze 19. storočia robili s kúpeľmi všade: prestavali ich, zmodernizovali a dostali do módy. Jeho syn Šimon postavil hotel a rozšíril park, ktorý je dodnes stredom mesta — kúpeľné domy tu stoja medzi vzrastlými stromami preto, lebo ich vysadil majiteľ v 19. storočí. Slovenské kúpele sa prerábali práve v týchto desaťročiach a práve takíto majitelia ich prerábali; Piešťany a Bardejov majú ten istý príbeh, len s inými menami.

  5. 1886–19091886 – 1909 A Turkish bath, a power station, an electric railwayTurecký kúpeľ, elektráreň, elektrická železnička

Iphigenia Sina had the Hammam built in 1888 beside the family's mirror pool: a Turkish bath in Oriental Moorish style, and the most remarkable historic building in the town. Two years before it, in 1886 to 1888, a hydroelectric station was built here generating alternating current at 5,250 volts; it lit the streets of the spa and of Trenčianska Teplá, Košeca and Ladce, and it powered a narrow-gauge electric railway up from the main line at Trenčianska Teplá, opened on 27 June 1909. In the same year the spa was sold to a Hungarian company. A resort with its own power station and its own electric railway was, in 1909, a genuinely modern thing.Ifigénia Sinová dala roku 1888 postaviť pri rodinnom zrkadlisku Hammam: turecký kúpeľ v orientálnom maurskom slohu a najpozoruhodnejšiu historickú stavbu mesta. Dva roky pred ním, v rokoch 1886 až 1888, tu vyrástla vodná elektráreň s napätím 5 250 voltov; svietila v uliciach kúpeľov aj v Trenčianskej Teplej, Košeci a Ladcoch a napájala úzkorozchodnú elektrickú železničku z hlavnej trate v Trenčianskej Teplej, otvorenú 27. júna 1909. V tom istom roku kúpele predali maďarskej akciovej spoločnosti. Kúpele s vlastnou elektrárňou a vlastnou elektrickou železničkou boli roku 1909 naozaj moderná vec.

  6. 1918–19381918 – 1938 Functionalism, and a congress of writersFunkcionalizmus a kongres spisovateľov

In 1918 the spa passed to a Czechoslovak company, and over the next twenty years Trenčianske Teplice became a fashionable resort of the new republic — which is why serious modern architects were given work here. Jaromír Krejcar won a competition in 1929 and in 1932 built the Machnáč sanatorium for the sickness fund of private clerks: a six-storey block with ribbon windows and a balcony on every twin room, and, measured against its volume, the most expensive Czechoslovak building of the decade. Bohuslav Fuchs cut the Zelená žaba open-air baths into the hillside above the town in 1936 and 1937, terraces and changing cabins following the slope. In 1936 the town also hosted the Congress of Slovak Writers: 53 members and a hundred invited guests, meeting to unite writers across party, church and generation at the moment fascism was rising in Europe. Bohuslav Fuchs vtesal v rokoch 1936 a 1937 do svahu nad mestom kúpalisko Zelená žaba, ktorého terasy a kabíny kopírujú sklon. Roku 1936 sa tu konal aj Kongres slovenských spisovateľov: 53 členov a sto pozvaných hostí sa zišlo, aby spojili spisovateľov naprieč stranami, cirkvami a generáciami práve vo chvíli, keď v Európe silnel fašizmus.

  7. 1939–19451939 – 1945 A spa in a client stateKúpele v klientskom štáte

Andrej Bagar, born in Trenčianske Teplice in 1900 and later the leading Slovak actor and theatre director of his generation, was jailed in 1939 and 1940 by the wartime Slovak State for anti-fascist activity; released, he worked at Bratislava radio under the cover name Ján Minárik, and in 1944 he went into the Slovak National Uprising and founded a Front Theatre that played to the insurgents. Nitra's theatre carries his name today. German troops occupied the Trenčín district after the Uprising began on 29 August 1944, and the front came up the Váh in April 1945. In the Kamenica part of town stands a monument to American airmen killed here, and in the spa park memorials to the dead of both wars. V mestskej časti Kamenica stojí pomník padlým americkým letcom a v kúpeľnom parku pamätníky obetiam oboch svetových vojen.

  8. 1948–19891948 – 1989 A state resortŠtátne kúpele

The spa was nationalised after the war, and for forty years it worked as a state resort: patients sent here by their doctors and their trade unions for diseases of the joints and the nervous system, treated in the same buildings the Sinas and the functionalists had left behind. Machnáč went on working as a treatment house and was placed on the very first list of protected cultural monuments in this country. A housing estate went up outside the spa core for the people who ran the place, and the little electric railway kept climbing the valley from Trenčianska Teplá.Kúpele po vojne znárodnili a štyridsať rokov fungovali ako štátne: pacientov sem posielali lekári a odbory na choroby kĺbov a nervovej sústavy a liečili ich v tých istých budovách, ktoré tu nechali Sinovci a funkcionalisti.

  9. 1989–19951989 – 1995 A festival townMesto festivalu

After November 1989 the spa was privatised, becoming the joint-stock company Kúpele Trenčianske Teplice in 1995, and the town found a second life as a festival town. Art Film Fest was first held here in June 1993, the year Slovakia became independent, with the support of UNESCO, three hundred visitors and a single small cinema hall. By 2009 it was drawing twenty-five thousand people, and a spa town of four thousand had learned to hold a crowd. Art Film Fest sa tu prvý raz konal v júni 1993, v roku vzniku samostatného Slovenska, s podporou UNESCO, s tristo návštevníkmi a v jedinej malej kinosále. Roku 2009 ich prišlo dvadsaťpäťtisíc a kúpeľné mesto so štyrmi tisíckami obyvateľov sa naučilo uniesť dav.

  10. since 2011od roku 2011 A working bath and a ruinFungujúce kúpalisko a ruina

The festival outgrew the town and moved to Košice in 2016, and Trenčianske Teplice answered by founding an International Film Festival of its own. Zelená žaba was restored and reopened in 2015. Machnáč was not: it has stood empty for years and appears on international lists of endangered modern heritage, so the two most famous buildings in town are today a working bath and a ruin, a few minutes' walk apart. Regular trains on the electric railway stopped on 10 December 2011; volunteers took it over, and since 2015 a non-profit has run summer weekend services and nostalgic trips — so check what is actually running before you count on it.Festival mesto prerástol a roku 2016 sa presťahoval do Košíc; Trenčianske Teplice odpovedali tým, že si založili vlastný International Film Festival. Zelenú žabu obnovili a roku 2015 znova otvorili. Machnáč nie: stojí prázdny už roky a objavuje sa na medzinárodných zoznamoch ohrozeného moderného dedičstva, takže dve najznámejšie budovy mesta sú dnes fungujúce kúpalisko a ruina, pár minút chôdze od seba. Pravidelné vlaky na elektrickej železničke prestali chodiť 10. decembra 2011; prevzali ju dobrovoľníci a od roku 2015 jazdí nezisková organizácia cez leto počas víkendov a robí nostalgické jazdy — takže si radšej vopred overte, čo naozaj premáva.
