History of Považská BystricaDejiny — Považská Bystrica

Považská Bystrica sits where the Váh squeezes between the Strážov Hills and the Javorníky, and everything here has been built along that narrow line: the river road, the castle strung out on the ridge above it, and, in the twentieth century, an arms factory that grew bigger than the town it stood in. Twice in a hundred years the place was pulled down and built again — once for the factory, once for the motorway that now strides over the centre on a viaduct.

  1. 1241, and a parish in 12501241 a farnosť v roku 1250 Stone castles, after the horsemenKamenné hrady po jazdcoch

In 1241 the Mongol armies rode through the Kingdom of Hungary, and King Béla IV drew one conclusion from the disaster: build in stone, and build high. The castles strung along the Váh belong to that programme, and the one on the ridge above Považské Podhradie is one of them. The settlement in the valley below appears in writing soon afterwards — a register of the Nitra diocese from 1250 records that a parish already existed here. That is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived; farmers had been working this stretch of the valley long before a clerk wrote it down.V roku 1241 prešli Uhorskom mongolské vojská a kráľ Belo IV. si z katastrofy odniesol jediné poučenie: stavať z kameňa a na výšinách.

  2. 1316–13301316 – 1330 Matúš Čák’s ridge, and a market below itHrebeň Matúša Čáka a trh pod ním

The castle first appears in writing in 1316 under the name Bystrický hrad, at a moment when this whole corner of the kingdom answered to Matúš Čák of Trenčín — a magnate who collected castles and taxes as though the king were far away, which he largely was. A charter of 1330 names the settlement again. By the end of the fourteenth century the place is recorded with the marks of a town: a market, privileges of its own, a name of its own. All of it depended on the road under the ridge, because traffic moving up the Váh had nowhere else to go.Hrad sa prvý raz spomína v roku 1316 pod menom Bystrický hrad — v čase, keď celý tento kút kráľovstva poslúchal Matúša Čáka Trenčianskeho, veľmoža, ktorý zbieral hrady a dane, akoby bol kráľ kdesi ďaleko.

In 1432 the town was burned by Hussite troops — Czech field armies that spent years operating deep in what is now Slovakia, sometimes as raiders, sometimes as garrisons hired by whoever was paying. The lasting change came in 1458, when King Matthias Corvinus granted the castle, the town and sixteen villages to Ladislav Podmanický. One family now owned the valley. A document their chancery issued in 1506, the Articuli Podmanickyani, set out what the lord owed his subjects and what they owed him — and it was written in the everyday language people here actually spoke rather than in Latin, which is why historians still read it.V roku 1432 mesto vypálili husitské vojská — české poľné oddiely, ktoré roky pôsobili hlboko na území dnešného Slovenska, raz ako záškodníci, inokedy ako posádky v žolde toho, kto práve platil. Trvalá zmena prišla v roku 1458: kráľ Matej Korvín daroval hrad, mestečko a šestnásť dedín Ladislavovi Podmanickému. Dolina tak mala jedného pána. Listina, ktorú ich kancelária vydala v roku 1506 — Articuli Podmanickyani — vymenúva, čo dlhuje zemepán poddaným a čo poddaní jemu, a je napísaná rečou, ktorou tu ľudia naozaj hovorili, nie po latinsky. Preto ju historici čítajú dodnes.

  4. 1533 · 1543 · 15581533 · 1543 · 1558 The brothers who fought everybodyBratia, čo bojovali so všetkými

Ján and Rafael Podmanický ran this stretch of the Váh in the generation after the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526, when the kingdom split between two rival kings and nobody could enforce anything. The brothers used that: they raided their neighbours, took Lednica castle up the valley by storm in 1533, and changed sides whenever it paid. A fire in 1543 gutted their own castle, and they rebuilt it larger, adding an outer bailey — the sprawl of walls along the crest that walkers cross today. Their line died out in 1558 and the estate passed to the Balassa family. Bratia to využili naplno: plienili susedné panstvá, v roku 1533 útokom dobyli Lednický hrad hore v doline a strany menili podľa toho, kde sa im viac oplatilo.

Local memory blames the Turks for the ruin on the ridge, and local memory is wrong. The town was plundered in 1604 by Bocskai’s men, in 1679 by Thököly’s, and again in 1707 during the Rákóczi rising — Hungarian revolts against Habsburg rule, not Ottoman raids. In 1684 the imperial troops of Leopold I besieged the castle because Thököly’s soldiers had got inside it, and in 1698 the emperor ordered it destroyed so that no rebel could use it again. The Balassas had given up on the place even earlier, moving down in 1631 to a comfortable Renaissance mansion in the valley, where the lords of Považské Podhradie lived from then on.Miestna pamäť pripisuje zrúcaninu na hrebeni Turkom — a mýli sa. Mesto vyplienili v roku 1604 Bocskaiovi vojaci, v roku 1679 Tökölyho a v roku 1707 znova, počas Rákócziho povstania: išlo o uhorské vzbury proti Habsburgovcom, nie o osmanské výpady. V roku 1684 hrad obliehalo cisárske vojsko Leopolda I., pretože sa doň dostali Tökölyho oddiely, a v roku 1698 dal cisár hrad zbúrať, aby ho už nijaký povstalec nemohol použiť. Balašovci sa ho vzdali ešte skôr — v roku 1631 sa presťahovali dolu do pohodlného renesančného kaštieľa a odvtedy páni Považského Podhradia bývali tam.

  6. 18861886 The town loses its privilegesMesto prichádza o výsady

After 1867 the Kingdom of Hungary ran its own internal affairs inside Austria-Hungary, and its governments spent the following fifty years pulling small local rights into the centre and pressing Magyar language and identity on everyone else. In 1886 the Hungarian government simply revoked Považská Bystrica’s municipal privileges — the market and self-government rights the place had held since the Middle Ages. Nothing replaced them. The town would not get its status back until 1946, in a different state altogether.

  7. 1918 · 1929 · 19321918 · 1929 · 1932 Czechoslovakia brings a cartridge factoryČeskoslovensko prináša muničku

In 1918 Austria-Hungary collapsed and this valley became part of Czechoslovakia. The change that mattered here was industrial. In 1929 the Roth cartridge works moved its production up from Bratislava onto the flat ground by the river, and from 1932 the plant was a branch of Československá zbrojovka in Brno, the country’s main arms manufacturer. A town of a few thousand people suddenly had a factory that could employ thousands. Almost everything that happened to Považská Bystrica over the next seventy years follows from that one decision.V roku 1918 sa Rakúsko-Uhorsko rozpadlo a táto dolina sa stala súčasťou Československa.

  8. 1939–19451939 – 1945 The factory goes to warFabrika ide do vojny

Czechoslovakia was broken up in March 1939 and the Slovak State that replaced it was Germany’s ally. The works here was pulled straight into the German war economy: from 1938 to 1945 it was run as part of the Reichswerke, and it turned out rifles — including the German army’s standard Karabiner 98k — together with small-arms ammunition.V marci 1939 Československo zaniklo a Slovenský štát, ktorý ho nahradil, bol spojencom Nemecka. Tunajšia zbrojovka sa dostala priamo do nemeckého vojnového hospodárstva: v rokoch 1938 až 1945 ju spravovali ako súčasť koncernu Reichswerke a vyrábala pušky — vrátane štandardnej nemeckej Karabiner 98k — aj strelivo do ručných zbraní.

  9. 1944–19451944 – 1945 The Uprising, and the frontPovstanie a front

The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and held a large part of central Slovakia for two months before German units crushed the open fighting at the end of October; partisan groups then fought on from the mountains through the winter. The front itself reached the upper Váh only in the spring of 1945, as Soviet and Romanian armies pushed north-west along the valley towards Žilina and the gap into Moravia. What the war left behind in Považská Bystrica was an arms plant and several thousand people trained to run it — and both were about to be put to a different use.Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944 a dva mesiace držalo veľkú časť stredného Slovenska, kým nemecké jednotky koncom októbra otvorený odpor nezlomili; partizánske skupiny potom bojovali z hôr celú zimu.

  10. 1946–19891946 – 1989 Scooters, bearings and a new townSkútre, ložiská a nové mesto

The works was nationalised and restarted in 1946 as the national enterprise Považské strojárne; in 1948 it was renamed after the communist president Klement Gottwald, and the town — which had won its municipal status back in 1946 — was rebuilt around it. It made ball bearings, machine tools and aircraft engines, but what Czechoslovakia remembers are the two-wheelers: Manet, Tatran, Jawa, and the Babetta moped that half the country learned to ride. At its height about fifteen thousand people worked there. Between 1950 and 1980 most of the old town was demolished and replaced with blocks of flats for them, which is why the centre looks the way it does.

  11. 1989–20001989 – 2000 When the factory stoppedKeď sa fabrika zastavila

A works built to arm an army had no obvious customer after 1989, and no single owner could hold it together. Považské strojárne broke up into smaller firms through the 1990s and the core enterprise went bankrupt in 2000. The town’s population peaked at 43,574 in 1999 and then fell as people left to find work. This is the standard story of a Slovak one-factory town, and Považská Bystrica lived through all of it.Fabrika postavená na zbrojenie nemala po roku 1989 komu predávať a nikto ju nedokázal udržať vcelku.

  12. 2008–20102008 – 2010 A motorway over the middle of townDiaľnica nad stredom mesta

The valley is narrow, the river and the railway already have the floor of it, and the D1 motorway still had to get through — so it was carried over the town on a viaduct more than a kilometre long, on piers standing between the housing blocks. Construction ran from 2008 and the road was opened on 30 and 31 May 2010. It is the most argued-about structure in the region: it took the transit traffic out of the streets and put a concrete deck over the centre in exchange. Engineering is still what the town lives on, now in hydraulics and machine shops rather than weapons.
