Považská BystricaPovažská Bystrica

The northern end of the region's stretch of the Váh: an engineering town rebuilt twice in one century, under a castle ruin strung along a ridge, with a motorway viaduct striding straight over its centre.

Where it standsKde leží

Považská Bystrica lies on the Váh where the Strážov Hills meet the Javorníky, near the northern edge of the region and upstream of Púchov. The valley is narrow here, which is why the river, the railway, the main road and the motorway all run within a few hundred metres of one another.

Považské Podhradie, now a suburb on the town's edge, sits under the castle ridge; the Manín gorge and the limestone crags behind it are a short drive east.

The storyHistória

The castle on the ridge above Považské Podhradie controlled this stretch of the river road. In the sixteenth century it belonged to the Podmanický family, whose brothers earned a lasting reputation for raiding their neighbours and defying whichever king currently claimed their allegiance — a lawless generation on this part of the Váh.Hrad na hrebeni nad Považským Podhradím ovládal tento úsek cesty popri rieke.

The town stayed small until heavy industry arrived between the wars, when a large arms and engineering works was built on the flat by the river. Under socialism it made bearings and the Manet scooters and Tatran mopeds that a whole Czechoslovak generation learned to ride, and the town was rebuilt around it, drawing workers from the whole upper Váh.Mesto zostalo malé až do medzivojnových rokov, keď na rovine pri rieke vyrástol veľký zbrojársky a strojársky závod.

The works broke up after 1990. The centre was then rebuilt a second time in the 2000s, and the D1 motorway was carried through the town on a long viaduct, opened at the start of the 2010s — the most argued-about piece of infrastructure in the region, and impossible to miss.

What to seeČo vidieť

Považský hrad, also called Bystrický hrad, is the thing to walk up to: not a compact keep but a string of walls, gates and courtyards following a long narrow crest above Považské Podhradie. The climb from the village is short and steep, and the ruin has its own pages here.

Manínska tiesňava, a short drive east near Považská Teplá, is one of the narrowest gorges in Slovakia — a road threading between limestone walls a few metres apart, with the smaller Kostolecká gorge beside it and climbing routes on the crags above.

The town centre itself is a study in twentieth-century planning rather than a place of monuments, and it is honest about that. What people go out for is the country above it: the Javorníky to the north-east, the Strážov Hills to the south, and marked trails starting from the edge of the housing estates.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

Engineering is still the base. Danfoss Power Solutions makes hydraulic components and systems for mobile machinery in the town, and a tail of machine shops and suppliers works around it; many people commute to the tyre plant at Púchov or into Žilina.Základom zostáva strojárstvo. Danfoss Power Solutions vyrába v meste hydraulické prvky a systémy pre mobilné stroje a okolo neho pracuje rad obrábacích dielní a dodávateľov; veľa ľudí dochádza do púchovskej gumárne alebo do Žiliny.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

The town is on the main Bratislava–Žilina railway, with fast trains stopping, and beside the D1 motorway. Buses run up the side valleys into the Javorníky and along the river in both directions.
