The communist state nationalised what there was and built heavy engineering on top of it. The plants that defined the town were VUMA, a research institute for mechanisation and automation, and beside it Drevina, Strojstav and Vzduchotechnika, plus two brickworks, a lime works, quarries and gravel pits, poultry works and clothing works. New housing estates, schools and cultural buildings went up for the people the factories pulled in from the villages. The gravel pit on the northern edge filled with water and became Zelená voda, the district's lake.Komunistický štát znárodnil, čo tu bolo, a postavil na tom ťažké strojárstvo.
