A marriage in 1616 carried Lednica into the enormous estates of the Rákóczi family, and that is what decided its end. Ferenc Rákóczi II led the last great Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs from 1703, and his kuruc soldiers held this castle. After the imperial victory at Trenčín in 1708 it fell to the emperor’s army, and in 1710 imperial troops burned it so that it could never shelter rebels again. The Turks, who get the blame for most Slovak ruins, had nothing to do with this one.
