Lednica castle was built in the second half of the thirteenth century, in the wave of stone castles the Kingdom of Hungary raised after the Mongol invasion of 1241 had shown what timber walls were worth. Its job was the north-western frontier: the way over the White Carpathians into Moravia runs behind it, and the Váh road runs below. Between 1259 and 1269 a man called Marek is recorded as count of Lednica. The flat land at the foot of the valley — the Rovne of the name, meaning simply “the flats” — belonged to that castle’s estate.Lednický hrad postavili v druhej polovici 13. storočia, vo vlne kamenných hradov, ktoré Uhorské kráľovstvo stavalo po vpáde Mongolov v roku 1241, keď sa ukázalo, čo vydržia drevené hradby. Jeho úlohou bola severozápadná hranica: za ním vedie cesta cez Biele Karpaty na Moravu, pod ním považská cesta. V rokoch 1259 až 1269 sa spomína istý Marek ako lednický komes. Rovina na ústí doliny — tie Rovne z názvu — patrila k hradnému panstvu.
