Before there was a town, or a kingdom, or a castle, there was an overhang in the travertine that people sheltered under. The Prepoštská jaskyňa in Bojnice is a genuine Old Stone Age site: scrapers, points and borers of the kind Neanderthals made, left here somewhere between about 70,000 and 40,000 years ago. The warm springs are the reason. They keep this ground milder than the country around it, and that was enough to bring people back to the same rock for tens of thousands of years. The site is shown today as a small museum of prehistory rather than as a show cave.Skôr než tu bolo mesto, kráľovstvo či hrad, bol v travertíne previs, pod ktorým sa ľudia ukrývali. Prepoštská jaskyňa v Bojniciach je skutočná paleolitická lokalita: škrabadlá, hroty a vrtáky, aké robili neandertálci, tu zostali niekedy pred zhruba 70 000 až 40 000 rokmi. Dôvodom sú teplé pramene. Držia tunajšiu pôdu miernejšiu než okolitý kraj, a to stačilo na to, aby sa ľudia na tú istú skalu vracali desaťtisíce rokov. Miesto je dnes sprístupnené ako malé múzeum praveku, nie ako turistická jaskyňa.
