The Ottoman century did not spare Upper Nitra. In 1599 a raiding force came up the Nitra valley and damaged Prievidza, a few kilometres from here — well behind the fighting frontier, which tells you how far a fast column could reach in a season. Bojnice's answer took two generations to build: the town's fortifications were finished in 1663. Emperor Ferdinand III renewed the town's privileges in 1647, which is the sort of thing a ruler does for a place he wants to see survive. Notice that the danger came from the south, up the river, and that everything about the town's defence assumes it.Osmanské storočie sa Hornej Nitre nevyhlo.
