The town reached its peak of about 43,500 inhabitants in 1999 and has been shrinking since, as the engineering works shed the jobs that had filled it. What has been growing instead is the castle. In 2007 the town and a volunteer association took the ruin on, and every summer since then work camps have consolidated it by hand: wall crowns rebuilt course by course in pale new lime mortar, the rubble core capped so rain runs off instead of in, a tower and a gate made safe, a viewing point opened on the crest. It is slow, unglamorous and unpaid — and it is the only reason there are still walls standing on this ridge.Roku 1999 dosiahlo mesto vrchol asi 43 500 obyvateľov a odvtedy sa zmenšuje, ako strojárne strácajú pracovné miesta, ktoré ho naplnili. Čo naopak rastie, je hrad. Roku 2007 sa zrúcaniny ujali mesto a dobrovoľnícke združenie a odvtedy ju každé leto ručne konsolidujú pracovné tábory: koruny múrov sa domurúvajú vrstvu po vrstve svetlou vápennou maltou, jadro muriva sa zakrýva, aby voda stekala dolu a nie dovnútra, veža a brána sú zabezpečené, na hrebeni pribudla vyhliadka. Je to pomalá, neefektná a neplatená práca — a je jediným dôvodom, prečo na tomto hrebeni ešte stoja múry.
