A great fire tore through the castle in 1543. The Podmanickýs rebuilt it and, in rebuilding, enlarged it — new architectural detail, and an outer bailey added beyond the old core. That is the moment the castle you walk today took its shape: the crest is narrow, so there was nowhere to grow but lengthways, and walls, gates and courtyards ended up running one after another from one end of the ridge to the other. Rafael Podmanický died in 1558 and the family ended with him. The castle passed to Gáspár Szerédi and then to the Balassas.Roku 1543 hradom prešiel veľký požiar. Podmanickovci ho obnovili a pri obnove aj zväčšili — pribudli nové architektonické prvky a za starým jadrom predhradie. Práve vtedy dostal hrad podobu, po ktorej dnes chodíte: hrebeň je úzky, rásť sa dalo len do dĺžky, a tak idú múry, brány a nádvoria jedno za druhým od jedného konca chrbta po druhý. Rafael Podmanický zomrel roku 1558 a rod s ním vymrel. Hrad prešiel na Gašpara Séredyho a potom na Balašovcov.
