After the Ottomans destroyed the Hungarian army at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom had two elected kings at once — Ferdinand of Habsburg and John Zápolya — and every noble family had to choose. The brothers Ján and Rafael Podmanický chose Zápolya, and then made the most of a country with no working central authority: from this ridge they raided the estates up and down the Váh, and when the king's authority was invoked against them they declined to recognise it. The chronicles remember them as the terror of the whole valley. How much of that is record and how much is the reputation given to a family that had made enemies of all its neighbours is a fair question — sixteenth-century chroniclers were rarely neutral.Keď Osmani roku 1526 pri Moháči zničili uhorské vojsko, malo kráľovstvo naraz dvoch zvolených kráľov — Ferdinanda Habsburského a Jána Zápoľského — a každý šľachtický rod si musel vybrať. Bratia Ján a Rafael Podmanickovci si vybrali Zápoľského a potom vyťažili maximum z krajiny bez fungujúcej ústrednej moci: z tohto hrebeňa vyrážali na panstvá hore i dolu Považím, a keď sa proti nim odvolávali na kráľovskú moc, jednoducho ju odmietli uznať. Kroniky ich pamätajú ako postrach celej doliny. Koľko z toho je záznam a koľko povesť, ktorú dostal rod znepriatelený so všetkými susedmi, je oprávnená otázka — kronikári 16. storočia bývali málokedy nestranní.
