The main Carpathian crest that carries the border above Nová Sedlica was the front line of the winter of 1914–15. Russian armies came over the passes on either side of this ridge and Austro-Hungarian armies fought to push them back, month after month, in snow and at altitude. It was among the deadliest campaigns of the whole war, and much of the killing was done by frostbite and typhus rather than by rifles. The military cemeteries scattered through the Snina district are what is left of it, and the ridge the walkers now cross to reach Kremenec was a place men were ordered to die on.Hlavný karpatský hrebeň, po ktorom vedie hranica nad Novou Sedlicou, bol v zime 1914 – 1915 frontovou líniou. Ruské armády prichádzali cez priesmyky po oboch stranách tohto chrbta a rakúsko-uhorské vojská ich mesiac po mesiaci tlačili späť — v snehu a vo výške. Patrilo to k najsmrteľnejším ťaženiam celej vojny a väčšinu obetí si vyžiadali omrzliny a týfus, nie pušky. Vojenské cintoríny roztrúsené po sninskom okrese sú tým, čo po nej ostalo — a hrebeň, po ktorom dnes turisti kráčajú na Kremenec, bol miestom, kde ľuďom rozkázali umrieť.
