Neolithic to the Roman period Layer upon layer under the fieldsVrstva na vrstve pod poľami

The ground around Hanušovce has been excavated more thoroughly than most in eastern Slovakia, and it keeps giving the same answer: people have lived at this river crossing, more or less without a break, for thousands of years. The digs have found settlement layers running from the Neolithic — the first farmers — through the Bronze Age and on into the Roman period, when the frontier of the Empire lay a few days' march south and Roman goods travelled north along rivers like this one. Nothing here was ever a city. It was simply a good place to be: water, a crossing, shelter from the wind and ground you could plough.Pôdu okolo Hanušoviec preskúmali archeológovia dôkladnejšie ako väčšinu miest na východnom Slovensku a stále dáva rovnakú odpoveď: pri tomto brode žili ľudia takmer bez prerušenia celé tisícročia. Výskumy tu našli sídliskové vrstvy od neolitu — od prvých roľníkov — cez dobu bronzovú až po dobu rímsku, keď hranica ríše ležala pár dní pochodu na juh a rímsky tovar putoval na sever práve popri takýchto riekach. Mesto tu nikdy nebolo. Bolo to jednoducho dobré miesto na život: voda, brod, závetrie a pôda, ktorá sa dala zorať.
