The parish church of the Assumption is the oldest building in the town and belongs to the generation of stone churches raised in this region after the Mongol invasion, in the second half of the thirteenth century. Its whole shape — nave, sanctuary and tower — comes from that single campaign of building, and its late-Romanesque carved faces are still set into the brackets that carry the vault ribs. The most exact evidence is up in the roof: the timbers that once held the builders' scaffolding are still there, and tree-ring dating puts them just after 1295. That is about as close as medieval archaeology ever gets to naming a working year. Local tradition credits the church to the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, a religious order based at nearby Chmeľov who held Hanušovce at the time.Farský kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie je najstaršou stavbou v meste a patrí ku generácii kamenných kostolov, ktoré v tomto kraji postavili po vpáde Mongolov, v druhej polovici 13. storočia. Celý jeho tvar — loď, svätyňa aj veža — pochádza z jedinej stavebnej etapy a neskororománske kamenné tváre sú dodnes osadené v konzolách, na ktorých spočívajú rebrá klenby. Najpresnejší dôkaz je hore v krove: trámy, ktoré kedysi držali stavebné lešenie, tam stále sú a dendrochronológia ich datuje tesne po roku 1295. Bližšie k presnému roku práce sa stredoveká archeológia dostane len zriedka. Miestna tradícia pripisuje stavbu rytierom Božieho hrobu, rehoľnému rádu so sídlom v neďalekom Chmeľove, ktorý vtedy Hanušovce vlastnil.
