Hanušovce nad Topľou stand on the Topľa about thirty kilometres east of Prešov, where the river leaves the hills between the Slanské vrchy and the Ondava Highlands and turns towards the eastern lowland. The storyHistória
The settlement is medieval and spent its history as a market town on estates in the Topľa valley, but the human record here is much older than that. The ground around the town has produced settlement layers from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age to the Roman period, and Hanušovce is one of the better-excavated sites in eastern Slovakia.Osada je stredoveká a dejiny prežila ako trhové mestečko na panstvách v doline Tople, ľudská stopa je tu však oveľa staršia. Pôda v okolí vydala sídliskové vrstvy od neolitu cez dobu bronzovú až po dobu rímsku a Hanušovce patria k lepšie preskúmaným lokalitám východného Slovenska.
The Baroque manor that dominates the town was built in the eighteenth century for the Dessewffy family, who held the estate. It is one of the larger country houses of the region and, unusually for the type, it came through the twentieth century intact enough to be put back to use.Barokový kaštieľ, ktorý mestu dominuje, postavili v osemnástom storočí pre Dessewffyovcov, ktorí panstvo držali. The railway arrived very late. The line through the town was built in the late 1930s and early 1940s, among the last large pieces of railway engineering undertaken in Slovakia, and it needed viaducts on a scale nothing else here had called for.Železnica prišla veľmi neskoro. The manor house holds the regional museum, with the archaeology of the Topľa valley as its core collection, and the archaeological park in the grounds is what most people come for: full-size reconstructions of prehistoric and early historic dwellings, built by the methods that raised the originals and worked as a live demonstration site through the season. The viaducts on the railway near the town repay a short walk. They carry the line across the side valleys on tall arches, the largest of them among the biggest railway bridges in the country, and the best views of them are from the road and the field paths rather than from the train.Za krátku prechádzku stoja viadukty na železnici pri meste. Beyond the town the Topľa runs downstream to Vranov and the Domaša reservoir, and upstream into the Šariš hills towards Bardejov. The Slanské vrchy, the volcanic ridge that separates this valley from the Košice basin, carry marked trails and a great deal of forest.Za mestom tečie Topľa po prúde k Vranovu a k nádrži Domaša a proti prúdu do šarišských kopcov smerom na Bardejov. The town is small and much of its working population commutes: Prešov is about half an hour away by road and Vranov less than that. Locally there is light manufacturing, timber, the building trades, farming in the valley and the public sector.Mesto je malé a veľká časť jeho pracujúcich dochádza: do Prešova je to autom asi polhodina, do Vranova menej. The museum and the archaeological park employ a modest number of people and bring school parties and visitors through the season.
