Under socialism the centre of Hanušovce was rebuilt: rows of prefabricated concrete blocks replaced the old single-storey houses, and the raised ground in the middle of the town, with the Great Manor, the Catholic church, the bell tower and the Small Manor standing on it, was left above them. The town had no large factory of its own, so people commuted — first on the new railway and then by bus — to Prešov and to the wood combine at Vranov. The Great Manor was restored in the 1970s and the regional museum moved into it, which is the reason the building survived at all.Za socializmu prestavali stred Hanušoviec: radová panelová zástavba nahradila staré prízemné domy a vyvýšená plocha uprostred mesta, na ktorej stojí Veľký kaštieľ, katolícky kostol, zvonica a Malý kaštieľ, zostala nad nimi. Vlastný veľký podnik mesto nemalo, a tak ľudia dochádzali — najprv novou železnicou, potom autobusmi — do Prešova a do vranovského drevokombinátu. Veľký kaštieľ obnovili v sedemdesiatych rokoch a nasťahovali doň vlastivedné múzeum, čo je dôvod, prečo sa vôbec zachoval.
