For most of a century, from 1630 to 1717, Hanušovce had a humanist grammar school — serious schooling for a town this size, teaching Latin and the new learning of the age. It belonged to the Protestant half of the town's life, because the parish church had been Lutheran ever since the Reformation. That ended in 1717, when the re-Catholicisation of Hungary handed the church back to the Catholics; it was given a Baroque interior in 1742, and a Baroque bell tower was built beside it in the same year. Behind those dates lie a hundred years of anti-Habsburg revolt, in which this valley was fought over, taxed by both sides and burned more than once. In 1635, in the middle of all that, the town won three more annual fairs — proof that the market outlasted the wars when little else did. Skončilo sa to v roku 1717, keď rekatolizácia Uhorska vrátila kostol katolíkom; v roku 1742 dostal barokovú úpravu a v tom istom roku pribudla vedľa neho baroková zvonica.
