The communist state redrew the map in 1960 and closed the district office at Giraltovce; the town has been administered from elsewhere ever since and today belongs to the Svidník district. In exchange it got the kind of industry that was put into small towns everywhere: a brickworks, metalworking, leather works after 1970, a pharmaceutical plant, a state forest enterprise and food processing — with flats, a health centre and a secondary school to go with them. The Greek Catholic Church, to which most of the surrounding villages belonged, was dissolved by the state in 1950 and allowed back only in 1968.Komunistický štát roku 1960 prekreslil mapu a okresný úrad v Giraltovciach zrušil; mesto je odvtedy spravované odinakiaľ a dnes patrí do okresu Svidník. Na oplátku dostalo priemysel toho druhu, aký sa vtedy dával do malých miest všade: tehelňu, kovovýrobu, po roku 1970 spracovanie kože, farmaceutický závod, štátny lesný podnik a potravinársku výrobu — a k tomu byty, zdravotné stredisko a strednú školu. Gréckokatolícku cirkev, ku ktorej patrila väčšina okolitých dedín, štát roku 1950 zrušil a povolil ju späť až roku 1968.
