Giraltovce lie on the Topľa in the low, rounded hills of the Ondava Highlands, about forty kilometres north-east of Prešov, on the road that runs from the city to Svidník and over the Dukla Pass into Poland. The storyHistória
Giraltovce spent most of their history as a market village on estates that changed hands repeatedly, with the fairs and the road for an economy and no walls or castle of their own. The country around was settled thinly, in Šariš villages strung along the streams, and it stayed agricultural into the twentieth century.Giraltovce boli väčšinu svojich dejín trhovou dedinou na panstvách, ktoré často menili majiteľov; hospodárstvom im boli jarmoky a cesta, hradby ani hrad nemali. Okolie bolo osídlené riedko, šarišskými dedinami roztiahnutými pozdĺž potokov, a poľnohospodárskym zostalo až do dvadsiateho storočia.
What shaped the present town was the war. In the autumn of 1944 the Carpathian–Dukla operation pushed the front into these hills and it did not move quickly; the fighting for the pass and the valleys behind it went on for months, and the settlements along the road took the damage. Giraltovce were rebuilt afterwards, which is why the centre is largely of the second half of the twentieth century.Dnešnú podobu mesta určila vojna. This is not a monument town and it does not pretend to be. The churches, the small square and the river are the whole of it; what Giraltovce offer is somewhere to stop on a long road and a base for the country on either side of it.Nie je to pamiatkové mesto a ani sa tak netvári. The wooden churches of the north-east are what most travellers are on this road for. The Greek Catholic and Orthodox villages of the Svidník and Bardejov districts keep a remarkable number of them, several on the World Heritage List, and the shortest routes between them run through the town or close by it.Väčšina cestujúcich ide po tejto ceste za drevenými kostolmi severovýchodu. Work in Giraltovce is what work is in a small town in this part of Slovakia: farming and forestry in the district, sawmilling and small manufacturing in the town, the building trades, and the public sector — school, health centre, offices — serving the surrounding villages. The district is among the poorest in the country. Commuting to Prešov and Košice is common, and long spells of work abroad are an ordinary part of family life rather than an exception.Okres patrí k najchudobnejším v krajine. There is no railway. The main road from Prešov to Svidník and the Dukla Pass runs through the town, and the buses along it — from Prešov, Svidník and Bardejov — are the practical way in.Železnica tu nie je.
