1553–1591 Burned down, rebuilt for cannonVyhorel a vstal pre delá

In 1553 a great fire destroyed most of the castle. Rebuilding began in 1555 under the starosta Jan Boner and was largely finished by 1557 — and it was a rebuilding for a different kind of war: the medieval walls gained Renaissance bastions shaped to hold cannon, with decorative attics and gun-loops instead of battlements. In 1591 the office of starosta passed to the Lubomirskis, a Polish princely family who would hold it for over a century and a half, until 1745. They are why the castle looks the way it does: almost everything above the Gothic core is the work of Polish governors.V roku 1553 zničil väčšinu hradu veľký požiar. Obnova sa začala v roku 1555 za starostu Jana Bonera a v podstate ju dokončili v roku 1557 — a bola to obnova pre iný druh vojny: stredoveké múry dostali renesančné bašty tvarované pre delá, ozdobné atiky a strieľne namiesto cimburia. V roku 1591 prešiel úrad starostu na Lubomirských, poľský kniežací rod, ktorý ho držal vyše poldruha storočia, až do roku 1745. Práve preto hrad vyzerá tak, ako vyzerá: takmer všetko nad gotickým jadrom je dielom poľských správcov.
