The castle is first named in writing in 1311; who exactly built it is disputed, some sources crediting the Polish prince Bolesław around 1280 and others King Charles Robert of Hungary. From 1308 it was in the hands of the Omodej family and from 1315 the Drugeths, the Neapolitan-Hungarian house that ran this whole frontier for the king. The oldest surviving parts — the round tower at the highest point of the rock and a Gothic palace beside it — belong to this period. Its job was unromantic and profitable: watch the road, and take a cut of everything that used it.Hrad sa prvý raz spomína v roku 1311; kto ho presne postavil, je sporné — časť prameňov pripisuje jeho začiatok poľskému kniežaťu Boleslavovi okolo roku 1280, iné uhorskému kráľovi Karolovi Róbertovi. Od roku 1308 ho držali Omodejovci, od roku 1315 Drugetovci, neapolsko-uhorský rod, ktorý pre kráľa spravoval celé toto pohraničie. Najstaršie zachované časti — okrúhla veža na najvyššom bode brala a gotický palác vedľa nej — pochádzajú z tohto obdobia. Úloha hradu bola nepoetická a výnosná: strážiť cestu a brať si podiel zo všetkého, čo po nej išlo.
