Look at the hill before you look at the walls. It is a plug of hard volcanic rock left standing when the softer ground around it wore away — steep on every side, standing out of the Sekčov valley completely on its own. A builder looking for a defensible site could hardly ask for better, and the castle on top is almost incidental to it. Archaeologists record an earlier Slavic hill-fort on the summit, from long before any stone was laid: the same reasoning about the same hill, several centuries earlier. That earlier fort is not closely dated, so treat the century with caution — the shape of the hill is the part that is certain.Skôr než sa pozriete na múry, pozrite sa na kopec.
